Geena cleared her throat. "Good game, huh?" she asked.

"It stinks!" Nicole's blue eyes were flashing. Her arms were crossed in front of her chest.

"Stinks?" Geena asked, startled. "Why?"

"I just spent the entire quarter running up and down the field," Nicole huffed. "And I only got the ball once! Of course you know what the problem is."

Geena didn't. She shook her head slightly.

"Tess!" Nicole bellowed. "She kicked the ball out of bounds instead of passing it to me. Did you see that?"

Geena thought back. She couldn't remember the play, but it didn't seem to matter. Nicole rushed on without waiting for her to answer.

"And later, when you had the ball," Nicole said. "She called for it even though Galaxy players were buzzing around her like flies! Meanwhile, guess who was wide open? Me!"

Geena thought that mistake sounded more like her own fault than Tess's. "Oops," Geena said. "Sorry."

"It's not your fault," Nicole insisted. "It's Tess's. She's the world's biggest ball hog."

Geena realized that she had been wrong about Nicole and Tess. They definitely weren't friends. Geena thought for a moment. Maybe Nicole could help her and Sarah and Rose.

"Ball hogging is not the worst of it," Geena told Nicole in a low voice. "I think Tess ts trying to break up the team."

Nicole's eyebrows flew up. "Break up the team?"

Geena nodded solemnly. "Maybe you can help me think of a way to stop her."

"You bet I will!" Nicole said firmly.
