Overview

The revision of this best-selling text for a junior/senior course in Foundation Analysis and Design now includes an IBM computer disk containing 16 compiled programs together with the data sets used to produce the output sheets, as well as new material on sloping ground, pile and pile group analysis, and procedures for an improved anlysis of lateral piles. Bearing capacity analysis has been substantially revised for footings with horizontal as well as vertical loads. Footing design for overturning now incorporates the use of the same uniform linear pressure concept used in ascertaining the bearing capacity. Increased emphasis is placed on geotextiles for retaining walls and soil nailing.

It is better in SI units

I think it is better this edition was prepared in SI units, due to it is easier to understand the examples, and SI is the future and present system. The bad situation is that some tables are quite different from early editions, and this could set to bas results on past calculations, so it is important to point out this.

    A structural/geotechnical engineer

I first used the fourth edition of this book in college, then switched to the fifth edition when it was released (I was still in college). I double majored in my Master's - both structures and geotech. I'm almost eight years out of school, in my own practice, and I still pull this book out whenever I need to double check some geotech ideas. This was my text through four geotech courses - it's a very good, well rounded book.

    Good for concepts, but...

This book is well-written and is great for studying the concepts of foundations. The down side is that all of the example problems in this edition have been converted to SI units. Personally, I think this undermines the quality of the book because too much time is spent trying to mentally convert the metric units into units that are more familiar (i.e. feet and pounds). Example problems are meant to reinforce the concepts that are taught in the book. The unfamiliar SI units shift too much of the reader's attention to understanding the units instead of trying to understand the relationship between the example problem and the underlying concepts. This criticism may sound petty, but I doubt that I'm alone on this one.
