Meet the Author

Morris Hein is professor emeritus of chemistry at Mt. SanAntonio College, where he regularly taught the preparatorychemistry course and organic chemistry. He is the original authorof Foundations of College Chemistry and his name has becomesynonymous with clarity, meticulous accuracy, and a step-by-stepapproach that students can follow. Over the years, more than threemillion students have learned chemistry using a text by MorrisHein. In addition to Foundations of College Chemistry,Twelfth Edition, he is co-author of Introduction to General,Organic, and Biochemistry, Eighth Edition, andIntroduction to Organic and Biochemistry. He is alsoco-author of Foundations of Chemistry in the Laboratory,Twelfth Edition, and Introduction to General, Organic andBiochemistry in the Laboratory, Eighth Edition.

Susan Arena earned a BS and MA in Chemistry at CaliforniaState University-Fullerton. She has taught science and mathematicsat all levels, including middle school, high school, communitycollege, and university. At the University of Illinois shedeveloped a program for increasing the retention of minorities andwomen in science and engineering. This program focused on usingactive learning and peer teaching to encourage students to excel inthe sciences. She has coordinated and led workshops and programsfor science teachers from elementary through college levels thatencourage and support active learning and creative science teachingtechniques. For several years she was director of an Institute forChemical Education (ICE) field center in Southern California. Susanenjoys reading, knitting, traveling, classic cars, and gardening inher spare time when she is not playing with her grandchildren.
