From The CriticsReviewer: Janice K. Warrington, MSNEd, RN (Delaware Technical & Community College)
Description: This comprehensive guide to the fundamentals of nursing practice covers everything from basic nursing concepts and skills to issues within various specialties of nursing. The previous edition was published in 2006.
Purpose: This book provides practical/vocational nursing students the fundamental knowledge required to provide safe, competent care for a wide variety of patients in all healthcare settings. The authors have done a nice job of pulling together all the aspects of nursing in a concise edition.
Audience: The book is written for licensed practical/vocational nursing students. Both editors are published authors in nursing education.
Features: Over 100 skills are presented in a step-by-step format with clearly defined nursing actions and rationales. Nursing care plans are presented in a case-study format and emphasize patient goals and outcomes. Nursing diagnosis boxes, screened and highlighted in the text, include nursing diagnoses for specific disorders paired with the appropriate nursing interventions. Patient teaching boxes include post-hospital discharge guidelines and disease prevention instructions with a strong focus on three-way communication among the nurse, patient, and family members. Cultural and ethnic considerations boxes include a variety of cultural scenarios that nurses may face when providing healthcare. Older adult considerations boxes provide age-specific information for the care of the aging population, which is often the primary focus of the LPN/LVN nurse. As with all of the Evolve products, the book includes online learning resources such as video clips, audio clips, and tutorials. A CD also accompanies the book.
Assessment: This is a nice addition to any library and provides a good foundation of nursing practice for LPN/LVN students. It is also a nice resource for any nurse.
