Description: This book does an excellent job of introducing and then building upon the basic concepts of exercise psychology, before applying these principles to the fields of sport, education, and research. An update of the 2006 edition, this book has current, peer-reviewed references to ensure that the concepts are the most relevant and respected. It supports a multitude of learning styles, using well-written text, descriptive illustrations, and online learning objectives and tools.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a textbook for the study of exercise psychology for students, practitioners, teachers, and exercise psychology enthusiasts. The authors aim to bridge the gap between research, practice, and instruction of exercise psychology principles by providing literature-based evidence and real-world situations that exhibit the implementation of the multitude of exercise psychology methodologies.
Audience: The highly respected and expert authors have written this book at a level appropriate for undergraduate and graduate students, healthcare practitioners, instructors/professors, coaches, and athletes. Although it does provide a strong introduction to and background in exercise psychology, it is recommended that readers have some prior education/training with sport and exercise science and psychology.
Features: The book is separated into seven distinct sections that can either be read or taught in order, or may be taught separately in a randomized order. The early sections excel in introducing the concepts of exercise psychology, whereas the latter sections emphasize the practice and implementation of exercise psychology principles and methodologies. Further, the authors do an excellent job of using a multitude of learning tools ranging from diagrams and figures to a useful online learning site that helps to enhance the learning experience.
Assessment: This book is a well-written and much-needed update to the field of exercise psychology. The use of research-based references helps to reinforce the current state of the field as well as ensure readers that they are learning the most up-to-date principles driving practice and implementation of specific methodologies. The variety of learning tools will appeal to learners of all styles.
