Daniels (Sweet Obsession) launches a contemporary series with this uneven, ultimately disappointing novel. In the promising opening scenes, best friends Sydney and Tori, who are both having man trouble, decide to embrace a life of single gal pals living together in a small North Carolina town. But Sydney's hilariously overdone attempt to defend Tori leads to an embarrassing mistaken telephonic confrontation with Brian, a local surfer with some baggage of his own. As she gets to know him, Sydney starts to realize what she was missing in her marriage. Brian and Sydney embark on a charming sequence of phone calls and text messages, cautiously proceeding through a secretive quasi-affair that's a delight to follow. But when they finally meet in person, the story spirals into a series of uncomfortable encounters with Brian's unforgivably sleazy friend Jamie, interspersed with summarized sex scenes. The book develops an abrasive focus on catering to the emotional needs of the male characters. The story is innovative and interesting for the first half, but by the end it looks as if this series might be one to skip. Agent: Kimberly Brower, Rebecca Friedman Literary. (Oct.)

Four Letter Word is by far one of my favorite books by J.Daniels!! I have read all of her books (her Bama Boys are amazing!) but this book, Oh My God! I need some Trouble in my life! This book is a must read! Be prepared to fall in love with Wild and Trouble and not want to come back to reality when it is over! I am looking forward to our next adventure in the Dirty Deeds series! Thank you J.Daniels for giving us such amazing characters and stories! ??

Sydney and Brian's first interaction was not one typically had by couples. Sydney somehow contacts Brian, unloads all of her pent up anger and frustrations on him, and then finds out that she dialed the wrong number. Brian takes it well, informs her of the mistake and then is intrigued enough by her that he texts her the next day. Sydney is struggling with her husband's declaration that he wants to dissolve their marriage, is no longer in love with her and wants her to move out. She moves in with Tori, who lives several hours away and sets about making a new life. Brian carries immense guilt over an accident and goes to extreme measures to try and make things right. When Sydney and Brian begin to communicate with each other, find themselves spending all day thinking of the other one, Sydney requests more. Because of the secrets he has, Brian doesn't want to have more just yet, he wants to savor his friendship with Sydney and their strong connection. When they finally do have a chance to meet, Brian will have to work hard to get Sydney to find out his reasons for pushing her away. Brian and Sydney set about making a future together and he does not hesitate to let her know where he sees this heading. Although rushed, their feelings were pure. Sydney then discovers a secret that threatens to blow their future apart. Brian has to set about fixing things and you'll have to read the book to discover if it works. Overall a good read and had a KA type of feel to it.

I am officially now a J. Daniels fan!! I recently read Sweet Addiction and really enjoyed it. When I saw the synopsis for Four Letter Word, I knew I couldn't pass this one up. There's just something about her writing style, story lines and characters that just works for me. I'm so happy that I found an author who I have a feeling will consistently please me with her books. I think the synopsis gives plenty of background, so I'll keep this review on the vague side. ;) “Love was a risk. It was wild and unpredictable. You could either hold on for the ride, not knowing how it would end, or you could let go and never know the amazing you could have had.” Sydney and Brian are an unlikely pair. They "meet" in one of the most hilarious scenes I've read in a very long time. I couldn't stop laughing throughout this entire scene, and even several times after reading it. Basically whenever I think about it. Yup, I'm actually laughing again right now. It's THAT funny!! I swear, J. Daniels just gets me with her words. “The heart is never wrong, honey. It’s just stupidly hopeful like the rest of us.” The romance between these two was hot. We're talking off-the-charts kind of hotness. Their nicknames for each other, "Wild" and "Trouble" explained them quite perfectly, so that should tell you how the adventures with this duo played out. All wild, all trouble, all the time. The side characters are equally incredible and quite necessary to the story. I adored the friendship between Syd and Tori. These two BFF's are diehard buddies and would do almost anything, and I mean ANYTHING for each other. (Even call an ex-boyfriend to totally ream them out with quite explicit language and horrible accusations. Now, THAT'S a good friend!!) The guys and their friendship was just as touching, but in a more manly way, of course. Though they weren't all sappy together, they had each other backs. I can't say that I loved Jamie, Brian's best bud, immediately, but I definitely loved him by the halfway point. He's crude, insulting, and a bit aggravating... but also quite funny and has a heart of gold. He totally won me over, despite it annoying ways. I'm so excited that I was sent a copy of this book. I haven't read nearly as many romance books as I'd like to lately. Now I'm dying for book two in this series, which is the story of two side characters from this book. (If you don't want any spoilers, DON'T read the synopsis for Hit the Spot!!!!) I LOVE companion novels, so let's just say I'll be ALL OVER this one!! Come on, Hit the Spot , get in my hands already!!!! (Thanks to Forever Romance for the review copy!)

Actual Rating 3.5 stars I was really excited to read Four Letter Word and couldn't wait to get it. Sadly, for me, it ended up just being OK. It certainly wasn't terrible, and I enjoyed it enough to want to finish it, but I didn't feel all that invested in the characters. I thought the idea of how Brian and Sydney met was original (though I wouldn't do this in real life!), but even though they talked and got to know each other in this way, it still felt superficial and like instalove when they got together. I sympathized with Brian and his guilt, but how he decided to solve his money problem didn't really seem realistic. I don't feel like that would be the answer that most people would come to if in that situation, but until you walk a mile in someone's shoes... I liked both MC's and it was nice to have the dual POV so that we could be in each of their heads. I did wish Sydney would have been a bit stronger emotionally, but given the circumstances she was facing I did understand where she was coming from. I actually was most annoyed by the way Brian spoke. It all seemed disjointed and was it my imagination that every sentence he said seemed to start with a verb? I feel like some nouns were missing. The ending felt too rushed and was resolved really quickly, but perhaps since this is the first book in the series, we will get further updates/epilogues on the characters later. I was most surprised that the drama came up so late in the book. It was inevitable though with all the foreshadowing, so I was expecting it and the push away. In the end, Four Letter Word was a fun and steamy read, that was enjoyable enough that I will still continue on with the series.

J.Daniels does not disappoint with the first book of the new Dirty Deeds series, Four Letter Word. What starts with a wrong number ends up being the best "mistake" Sydney ever makes. From page one, Daniels draws you into the story and you don't want to stop until you've reached the end. I read the book in less than 24 hours because I simply couldn't put it down. Daniels has created an awesome Aphla male in Brian and Sydney is his perfect complement. Brian may just be my favorite character Daniels has ever written. It's hard not to fall in love with him.

4.5 STARS! “And you don’t question perfect moments. You let them happen.” Left heartbroken, Sydney leaves her home and goes to stay with her best friend, Tori. Tori is also going through some issues. Sydney picks up the phone to yell a barrage of insults to the man who has caused her friend heartache, only to learn that the person on the other line is not the one she should be yelling at. Wrong number. Sydney is mortified, apologizes and hangs up. Brian Savage is broken. His life isn’t one he wishes on anyone. There are demons he battles on a daily basis. But he heard some fire in the voice of Sydney that he cannot simply ignore. She ignited a light in him with her emotions that he can’t stop thinking about. So then he sends her a message. This forever changes the trajectory of their lives. “Best two and a half weeks of my life came from a girl who was never meant to give me anything. And she was giving me everything.” How can you feel this connected to someone through a phone call? Their connection is truly palpable. Every word uttered between the two brings them closer to an attraction they cannot even put into words. There is a mystery to Brian. You feel the underlying secrets and lies that you simply cannot put your finger on. And when you do, you become even further invested into the story. As the story progresses and the plot unravels, it is impossible to put this book down. The electricity between Brian and Sydney is simply unmistakable and unequivocal. The build up will have your heart racing. The author expertly balances an unforgettable and unique love story while keeping the reader in suspense of what is to come. “You’re the best mistake I’ve ever made.” This truly is a love story like any other. The characters are genuine and beautifully flawed. The author effortlessly captured the realness of two broken people. How Brian and Sydney met was unconventional, but their love was not. Their love was spellbinding and consuming. And every moment together means more than the last. Their love saved the other from a life in despair and darkness. A life of uncertainty. “She said she would love me loudly, and she did. Every second.” Four Letter Word is utterly and seductively addicting. From the very beginning, the author masterfully sets a tone where she places the reader directly within the pages of the book. This gripping read was heartfelt and emotional, while still sexy and passionate.

I will admit that I was a little wary of starting this series as it seemed different from her preious books, but I absolutely loved this book. It had the best mix of happy and drama with some sassy thrown in for good measure. I couldn't put it down and cannot wait for the next book in the series to come out.

Four Letter Word has been one of my most anticipated reads for this year and the time is finally here! This book was funny, sexy and just a bit heartbreaking. The build up between the characters and their chemistry was off the charts. Syd and Brian were both going through hard times from very beginning and it was interesting trying to figure out where they were going to go from there. Reading their story and watching them slowly heal parts of one another that they thought couldn't be healed was one of my favorite parts of reading this book. The big tease was how long it took Brian and Syd to actually meet in person. The entire situation actually made me anxious, just watching their relationship build and build yet waiting for the moment they finally crossed paths and put their cards on the table. Besides the long wait, I really enjoyed it- especially its secondary characters. Syd's best friend Tori and Brian's roommate Jamie were always bumping heads and it was something that I actively looked forward to- seeing them interact with one another and wondering what crazy thing would come out of Jamie's mouth next. Luckily, we will be getting Jamie's book in December and I can't wait to see where this series takes these characters. *Disclaimer: A Review Copy was kindly was provided to Reads By Rose by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. 4.25 stars-- FOUR LETTER WORD is the first installment in J. Daniels’s contemporary, adult DIRTY DEEDS erotic, romance series. This is former surfer Brian ‘Dash’ Savage, and x-ray technologist Sydney Paige’s story line. Told from dual first person points of view (Sydney and Brian) FOUR LETTER WORD follows the building relationship between Sydney Paige and Brian Savage. When her husband of seven years announces he wants a divorce our heroine packs her bags and heads to Dogwood Beach to move in with her best friend Tori but Tori’s personal life has also gone to h*ll and Sydney decides to confront the man that destroyed Tori’s life. A wrong number and a verbal tirade focusing on the stranger at the other end of the line finds Sydney mortified to learn she cussed out the wrong man. Enter former surfer Brian Savage, and the man who would begin a ‘virtual affair’ with our story line heroine. What ensues is the back and forth texting and phone calls in which our couple begin to fall in love before they ever meet. Brian Savage is a broken man; racked with guilt and a need to repent for sins of the past Brian has too many secrets that are about to destroy the woman with whom he is falling in love. Sydney Paige is trying to put her life back together, and falling in love with Brian is the balm to her broken heart. The relationship between Sydney and Brian begins accidentally when our heroine dials Brian’s number by mistake. Brian is so impressed with the ‘tirade’ on the other end of the line he texts back our heroine and thusly begins a romantic relationship with a woman he has never met. Meeting in person our couple are quick to consummate their relationship-a relationship that is mired by secrets and betrayal. The $ex scenes are intimate, intense and provocative. Our couple like to talk dirty in the bedroom. There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including Brian’s friends Cole and Jamie McCade as well as Sydney’s co-workers at the Whitecaps diner Shay, Sean and Kali, and their boss Nate whose personal life is broken and sad. We are introduced to Sydney’s best friend Tori whose own life is a series of mismanaged relationships but there is some definite sexual attraction between Tori and Brian’s business partner and ‘local surfing legend’ Jamie McCade-a sexual attraction that finds Tori and Jamie bickering throughout the story. The world building follows the friendships and relationships of two groups of friends, and the fall out of one couple when Brian’s secrets or ‘lies of omission’ threaten their building love. FOUR LETTER WORD has a little bit of everything: humor, fun, romance, intrigue, betrayal, heartbreak and love. The premise is engaging, clever and emotional; the characters are passionate, broken and dynamic; the romance is captivating and intense. J. Daniels FOUR LETTER WORD is a moving story line with sympathetic characters and a wonderful happily ever after.

3.5 stars I really like stories that involve a group of friends. This is one of those. The girls are besties and the guys are too so naturally they all end up in the same circle. Sydney has a heck of a start. She’s going through some personal hell, and then finds out that her girl is too. This all leads to a mix up of Sydney telling the wrong guy off. I like the way this accidental action spurs a whole love story. Lots of random things happen with a little too exact timing in the storyline, but this conversation is the best. Brian is also going through some issues. Although, Sydney does have reasons to be upset, I think Brian’s obstacles are bigger. Some are life, and some are self-made. He seems to have more of a support system initially that she does though. Basically everything is a major life-altering event that both are going through. Four Letter Word has laughter, tears and sexy times. I liked how it also focused so much on friendship. I’ll continue the series. I’m looking forward to seeing how the other romances play out.

Love is never what we perceive it to be. Sometimes we meet our perfect match when we least expect it while on a rampage and dial a wrong number. Sydney is starting over, rebuilding. Brain never thought answering a phone call would introduce him to a woman he couldn’t forget, woman he must know, a woman who can heal him. Anticipation, heat and second chances wrapped up in great writing and a wonderful concept. Hidden secrets always surface and Brian has some huge skeletons in his closet. Finding love, finding peace, finding forgiveness and moving on. A great read! ““Sometimes family isn’t made up of who you’re born to or who you share a name with. Sometimes it’s made up of a strange man you accidentally dial up and cuss out, or waitresses at a seaside restaurant, or seven-year-old twins who tell you you’re awesome and super pretty. Family are the people who support you and love you no matter what. Who care about your happiness and who don’t pass judgment. Who heal you. Who accept you and the life you’re living.”

***4 ‘I’m locked down’ stars*** The whole calling the wrong number thing was the hook for me. I had to find out just how crazy Syd would get on poor, unsuspecting Brian and I was not disappointed at all. It was brilliant! But once that crazy was over I found myself continuing to turn the page because I needed to find out how everything would play out between them and loved every second of it. It was sweet, sexy, funny, frustrating, heartwarming and heart breaking. Syd has been dealt a major shock to her system and though she is reeling from it she realizes, with a little help, that it isn't the end of her world. She also realizes that she lost herself at some point and fights to become the woman she really is. I really liked Syd, she is sassy, sweet and has a good heart, and I enjoyed watching as she worked through her issues and found herself again. Brian is carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders and has been trying to make a wrong right by doing things he would never have dreamed of doing prior to. Those closest to him have tried to make him see that he doesn’t have to do it, but his own self hatred won’t let himself believe it. I absolutely adored Brian. This guy has such a huge heart it was hard not to like him even when I wanted to smack some sense into him, and believe me you will want to smack some sense into him because there are some things that he does that will have you growling in frustration. But he’s just that guy. Sweet, wickedly sexy (God the things that came out of his mouth ~ have an ice bath ready), at times quite blunt and yet oh so charming. Wild and Trouble. I love how they first “met”, Syd really went for it and Brian was just...well, you’ll just have to read it to find out, and how their relationship grew from there. The phone calls and texts were fun and through them they got to know each other pretty well and when they finally come face to face it was explosive ~ have your BOB nearby or an ice bath ready. The pothole in their journey to their HEA isn’t a secret and I have to admit that I kept turning the pages to see how that bomb would drop and I have to say it was executed well. I’m still not sure how I feel about the initial fall out from it, I get it but still...but I do like how it was resolved and that’s really all that matters in the end. Four Letter Word is my first book by J. Daniels and I really enjoyed it. It was engaging, well paced and I thought the dual 1st person POV’s were done very well. I thought the secondary characters were all well written and I liked how we got to know them and caught a glimpse of what could be future storylines they didn’t overshadow Brian and Syd’s story, but simply add depth to the world. I’ll be honest and say that Stitch is the one I want to know more about, which really isn’t a surprise, but I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in the series and seeing how that one turns out. ~ ARC received from the publisher via NetGalley and reviewed voluntarily ~

4.5 Stars!! “I was wired and burning, restless for more words and sweet, light tones. I wanted her to be that way, too, and to want to give me that. Mine. This was mine. Her voice in my ear in the dark.” “Love was a risk. It was wild and unpredictable. You could either hold on for the ride, not knowing how it would end, or you could let go and never know the amazing you could’ve had.” “He was never a choice. He was my fate. My boy. Everything he ever promised me he made sure to see through.” Four Letter Word has been one of my most anticipated reads of the year. I could not wait to get my greedy hands on this book. And I have to tell you, the moment I picked this book up, I devoured it. This story was so refreshing and so not what I expected, and I mean that in the best way possible. Four Letter Word starts off with a bang and pulls you in from page one. By the time I was finished with the first chapter, I was hooked. I fell in love with Sydney and Brian right away. Sydney was so easy to connect with and understand. Her life was turned upside down when her husband of 7 years decided he didn’t want to be married anymore. She leaves to seek solace with her best friend. She had no idea that a wrong phone call, made to defend her best friend, was about to changer her life one more time….Brian doesn’t have a lot of good in his life. He has a lot of guilt and regrets. So, when he gets a phone call meant for someone else, the voice at the end of the line brings him back to life. There is just something about Sydney’s voice that makes him want more. Both Brian and Sydney are being offered a second chance. Will they take the risk on something amazing or will they let the fear of the past stand in their way…. I absolutely loved Four Letter Word. This story captivated me and refused to let me go until I finished every last word. I loved the chemistry and connection that Sydney and Brian had. They had great push and pull. I enjoyed seeing them interact and watching their relationship grow. I enjoyed watching Sydney come back to life and be the woman she was before she got married. I loved seeing her take risks and be “wild”. Brian entered her life at just the right moment and showed her exactly what she was missing in her life. And Brian….He was sexy, alpha, dangerous. His life was so complicated. He needed some good, some sweet, some light in his life. Sydney slowly showed him that he was worth more and made him see the truth in things. But, what I really loved and appreciated was that neither one of these characters were perfect. They were flawed and made mistakes and dealt with real issues. There is not much else that I can say about this book other than I just loved it. It was an amazing read, from start to finish. Brian and Sydney’s story took me on one incredible and times emotional ride. It had just the right mix of drama, secrets & lies, angst, romance and sexy good times. I think the Dirty Deeds series is off to a fantastic start and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book in this series.

‘...maybe he felt as crazy as I did in that moment, Wild in every sense of the word...’ I am completely and utterly wild about this book. There's no other way to say it. I enjoyed every second. The friendships. The romance. The heat. The trouble. THE WILD. J. Daniels is one of my favorite authors, and for very good reason. Her words are smart and funny, her stories engaging, romantic and sexy. Her series are addictive—whether sweet, summery or dirty. And Four Letter Word is proof positive of that. I LOVED Brian and Sydney. Their meet-cute was passionate and tickling, and their slow-burn phone-friendship was completely charming. I felt the tension between them, I got lost in their banter, their playfulness, their honesty. Their heartbreak. And when it all started to come together, fall apart, rebuild, I felt like my heart was on the steepest, craziest of roller coasters. In the best possible way. With this just being book one in her new Dirty Deeds series, and with the host of crazy, lovable secondary characters (*cough Tori and Jamie cough*), it's a no-brainer that I CANNOT wait for more of the Dogwood Beach crew. I'm sure I'll be just as crazy about them as I am wild about Wild and Trouble. “How much do you love me right now?” he asked, face deadly serious. “Scale of one to ten.” “Eleven.” ~ SIX Wild STARS ~

This was so amazing. Such a full, rich story with detailed characters full off passion and emotion. I was so mesmerized by the story and everything that was happening, I honestly feel blown away. This was my first book by J. Daniels and beyond the synopsis, I had no idea what to expect. I was honestly hooked right from the beginning because I felt so captivated by how the story started. At 11% I had a oh wow! I didn't see that coming moment and pretty much was lost in this world until the end. There is just so much anticipation between Sydney and Brian, so many things I was excited about happening and looking forward too. I was not disappointed. There is such a fantastic build as everything comes together and develops. So much passion, it's explosive. There's this deep pain that the characters have and I love how they open up to one another, healing and growing. There were just so many wonderful moments that had me loving Brian, thinking he was the sweetest man ever. This is one of those stories that's hard to say a lot without spoiling anything because just like I did, I think you need to read it and experience it for yourself. I laughed and cried, got a little steamed up, and smiled so big buy the end. It was all just fantastic. I loved the secondary characters as well and can't wait for the next stories in the series. I am seriously hooked! The writing was incredible. Perfect build... I could feel all the tension and anticipation. I couldn't wait to learn the details of Brain’s back story and hung to every word. When all is revealed, it was truly heart wrenching, I felt so bad for him, I also completely understood some of his motivations. I loved him, he’s fantastic character. And Sydney, that girl was so sweet and open, wearing her heart in her sleeve. I loved watching her confidence grow in who she was and finding a family of her own. Brian and Sydney coming together was just so great. There were just so many unexpected things I didn't see coming and felt it was a unique story. Totally fresh and exciting to read. I don't know what else to say besides you have to read this and experience it for yourself. It's just one of those reads with unforgettable characters, fantastic drama, passion, heat, and emotion that you have to immerse yourself in. Four Letter Word is not to be missed.
