Overview

A night takeoff in fog with zero-zero visibility in a venerable old Douglas DC-3 from Ciudad Victoria, Mexico almost ends in disaster for Jay Leicester, his copilot, and three passengers. The reason for the near crash was found to be that the aircraft was overloaded by ten thousand pounds with pure gold plates. The mystery of how and why the gold was on board involves the Mexican Mafia, Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs, the death of a Mexican Governor, an expatriate-biker, and a murder contract on the lives of Leicester and two of his employees and endangers several of his close friends. As the novel moves to its climatic and complex resolution, the reader is once more held fast by the unique art of J.C. Simmons crackling suspense rooted in a strong perception of reality.

Well written. Many twists and turns but the mystery of who done it is kept to the end. Can be long winded-but keeps readers hanging on to the end.

I enjoyed the story. It was a quick and entertaining read. I did not give it 4 or 5 stars because the ending was quite abrupt. I felt that a lot was left unresolved.

This story is put together tightly, that is to say I see no weaknesses in this author's ability to use not only those literary skills - dialog, plot, setting, etc. - required to engage the ready, but he also has that extra "knack" for storytelling. Seems to me there are more authors with the former skills than with the latter. Mr. Simmons possesses the full repertoire that, at the end of day delivers a well-conceived and entertaining tale of mystery and imagination. Highly recommend this book and esp. this author.
