Four Past Midnight

What happends to the wide-eyed observer when the window between reality and unreality breaks, and the glass begins to fly? Here are four answers from the ultimate expert, Stephen King. Includes "The Langoliers, " "Secret Window, Secret Garden, " "The Library Policeman, " and "The Sun Dog."

Editorial Reviews

Chicago Tribune
These four novellas demonstrate the qualities that have made Stephen King the world's most popular author.
Washington Post
These stories grab and will not let go.
Publishers Weekly
The self-described ``America's literary boogeyman'' here serves up four horror novellas; none is wildly scary, and only one offers King's typical, colloquial, hard-driving conversational style with its compulsive readability. A jumbo jet flies through a time-slip in The Langoliers . Marooned a few minutes in the past, a few surviving passengers try to get home . . . while off in the distance the langoliers, creatures (``sort of like beachballs'') who eat up time after it's been used, close in. In Misery -esque Secret Window, Secret Garden , a writer accused of plagiarism by a psychopath has an awful time trying to prove his innocence. The Library Policeman , the collection's standout, pits a middle-aged businessman with some overdue books against a demonic, life-sucking monster of a librarian. The Sun Dog features a boy's Polaroid camera, which, no matter where it is focused, takes pictures of a huge, mean and ugly dog. In each successive photo, the dog, slobbering and slavering, approaches the edge of the picture plane. There is an inappropriate abundance of heartwarming sentimentality here; where King used to slaughter the innocents with gleeful impunity, he now apologizes for the deed, and love will out. 1,500,000 first printing; $750,000 joint ad/promo with NAL's publication of The Dark Half; BOMC main selection. (Sept.)
School Library Journal
YA-- Like some denizen of the dark, King weaves a spell evoking terror and shivers as he takes readers on a nightmarish journey in this quartet of novellas. In ``Longoliers'' a group of airline passengers awake to an empty plane, and an empty world. They have become stuck in time, out of sync with the present at 20,000 feet. ``Secret Window, Secret Garden'' finds novelist Mort Rainey confronted by an eerie character who accuses him of plagiarism, and has come to settle up. In ``Sun Dog,'' Kevin Delevan gets exactly what he wanted for his 15th birthday, a Polaroid ``Sun 660'' camera, but every picture he takes shows a salivating ``hell hound'' getting closer and closer. In ``Library Policeman,'' the best of the four, Sam Peebles borrows two books from the library late one night, and the librarian warns him not to be late returning them. What Sam doesn't know is that she was a child murderer who committed suicide in 1960, and when he loses the books, her library policeman pays him a visit. Four Past Midnight is one of King's best recent works. It is hard to put down, truly chilling, and sure to be enjoyed by YA horror aficionados everywhere.-- John Lawson, Fairfax County Public Library, VA

Meet the Author

Stephen King
Stephen King

Stephen King, the world's bestselling novelist, was educated at the University of Maine at Orono. He lives with his wife, the novelist Tabitha King, and their children in Bangor, Maine.

Biography

Fiction powerhouse Stephen Edwin King was born in Portland, Maine, in 1947. As a student at the University of Maine at Orono, he wrote a weekly column for the school newspaper, became active in political causes, and met his wife, the former Tabitha Spruce. In the early years of his marriage, King augmented his meager teacher's salary by selling short stories to men's magazines. Then, in 1973 he hit pay dirt: his novel Carrie was accepted for publication, and a major paperback deal provided the means for him to leave teaching and concentrate full-time on writing. Since then, the prolific author has never looked back.

Dubbed the Master of the Macabre for his domination of the horror genre, King has also written bestselling thrillers, mysteries, fantasies, novellas, and short stories, many of which have been turned into blockbuster films and miniseries (A partial list includes Carrie, The Shining, The Stand,, Misery, It, The Shawshank Redemption, The Langoliers, Stand by Me, and The Green Mile). He also has two works of nonfiction to his credit: a gorgeously crafted memoir/scribbler's how-to (On Writing) and Faithful, a chronicle of the Boston Red Sox' stellar 2004 season, cowritten with Stewart O'Nan. In 2003, he received the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.

In between books, the indefatigable King performs in the Rock Bottom Remainders, a rock band that includes among its rotating personnel fellow authors Dave Barry and Amy Tan; attends as many Boston Red Sox games as is humanly possible; and contributes with his wife, Tabitha, to many local and national charities.

Good To Know

Don't believe everything you read about Stephen King. Among the gossip circulating about the scribe is the rumor that he is going blind. King assures his fans that while he is genetically predisposed to a disease called macular degeneration, which could result in blindness, he is not actually going blind.

King is probably one of the most easily recognizable authors alive, and it's not just because of his string of bestsellers. King has appeared in a number of films based on his work, including Pet Semetary, Thinner, and The Stand.

If you've ever wondered why Stephen King has written several books under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, there is actually a very simple explanation: King is so prolific that he felt it necessary to create an alter-ego so that he could publish more than one book a year. The name was a hastily hobbled together combination of writer Richard Stark (ironically, a pseudonym for Donald Westlake) and Randy Bachman of rock group Bachman-Turner Overdrive.

Four past the witching hour . . . and beyond.

Having been a huge Stephen King fan for many years now, I find myself going back to some of the better novels he's written and rereading them - or even listening to them on audio tapes as I drive to and from work. I recently picked up Four Past Midnight again and found myself enjoying it even more the second time around. King's work is like a fine wine, tasting better with time. The first haunting tale is The Langoliers - a spooky time warp piece about plane passengers who have found themselves stuck in an alternate time where these strange creatures exist. I enjoyed the story, especially the character Mr. Toomey, but found it a tad too long for my taste. I still cringe when I think about what happened to the little girl. The second tale -Secret Window, secret Garden, is more my speed. It's about a writer who is confronted by John Shooter, an angry man who is accusing him of stealing his story. This story will twist your mind and has a great ending. A must read! The third tale past midnight is The Library Policeman - the best of the four stories. Ever been late getting your books back to the library? In King's haunted mind, you'll pay greatly for such an innocent mistake. This story was not only spooky and creepy but had characters you cared about. I really enjoyed this one. The fourth story is The Sun Dog - about a strange poleroid camera which takes photos of a mencaing dog. With each new picture, the dog gets closer and closer in the pictures. Another eerie (dog's) tail from the master of horror. All in all, this was a great collection of four creepy stories you'll love sinking your fangs in to.

    In respect for the King

    S. King proves he is the master of horror. I see a few writers on the horizon with similar styles, grinding in the really horrific and unbelievable aspects of a tale, and I look forward to seeing how the King holds on to his throne.

Steven King fans, this is a must.

This Book is great. 'The Library Policeman' puts a whole new twist on returning late library books. As always, King delivers the best, and features the hit story 'The Langoliers'. Great book in my opinion.

    4 Excellent Novellas

The 4 novellas of this book are: The Langoliers; Secret Window, Secret Garden; The Library Policeman; and The Sun Dog. My favorite of the lot was The Langoliers. It was my favorite because it seemed farfetched, but it also seemed like that story could really happen. It is a story about passengers who fall asleep and find that they've travelled through a time hole and gone back in time. They spend most of the story trying to figure out what happened. There are many twists in this story. King quite possibly wrote one of the greatest stories I've ever read in The Langoliers as it had me hooked from the page 1. Highly reccomended for anyone 12 and older.

    Wow! A masterpiece!

King has done it again. A mindbinding short story that will make you thinking as you turn the pages. The movie was great but not as good as the book. King will always be the king of writting!

Good, but in my opinion, flawed

This collection of novellas all have interesting plot lines, but I don't think they are as well-polished as the four in 'Different Seasons.' The first story, 'The Langoliers,' was the best of the four. A very interesting plot and a surprisingly uplifting ending make this the cleanest, and finest story in the collection. I saw the movie 'Secret Window' before reading 'Secret Window, Secret Garden,' and although I liked the novella, for some reason I liked the darkly funny ending to the movie over King's conclusion. 'The Library Policeman' was very disturbing and wild. I liked the original idea, but when everything is explained, I found it too wild to be satisfying. 'The Sun Dog' was very good as well, the only flaw being the overly long ending scene. Descriptive is good, but don't overdo it! I recommend this collection to Stephen King fans, but not to those new to his work.

This book is King at his best

King has for many years and I'm sure for years on, made us believe in things that we can only see in movies. I loved this book because it came out the way it should have, and that's the best way. This is a great read...

    One Scary Short Story!

I love Stephen King and this is one of my favorite short stories. Original, well written and frightening, it scared the bejesus out of me! I read it years ago when it was first published, and just reread it with my husband who also liked it. The movie was good, but the written story is so much better! See for yourself...you won't be disappointed!!
