Overview

Two years before Beatrice Prior made her choice, the sixteen-year-old son of Abnegation's faction leader did the same. Tobias's transfer to Dauntless is a chance to begin again. Here, he will not be called the name his parents gave him. Here, he will not let fear turn him into a cowering child.

Newly christened "Four," he discovers during initiation that he will succeed in Dauntless. Initiation is only the beginning, though; Four must claim his place in the Dauntless hierarchy. His decisions will affect future initiates as well as uncover secrets that could threaten his own future—and the future of the entire faction system.

Two years later, Four is poised to take action, but the course is still unclear. The first new initiate who jumps into the net might change all that. With her, the way to righting their world might become clear. With her, it might become possible to be Tobias once again.

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth comes a companion volume to the worldwide bestselling divergent series, told from the per-spective of the immensely popular character Tobias. The four pieces included here—The Transfer, The Initiate, The Son, and The Traitor—plus three additional exclusive scenes, give readers an electrifying glimpse into the history and heart of Tobias, and set the stage for the epic saga of the Divergent trilogy.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Brace yourself for some numbers: Four is a collection of five short stories from the Divergent trilogy, each told from the point of Tobias Eaton, Divergent's "Four." These stories, only one of which was issued before as an eBook, serve as a revealing prequel to Veronica Roth's stirring series. By rendering the back-story of one of Divergent's prime movers, Four opens a portal to the mysterious time before Tris chose Dauntless. (P.S. This hardcover edition contains an exclusive scene.)

Publishers Weekly
07/21/2014
Four's story is already achingly familiar to fans of Roth's Divergent—his close relationship to protagonist Tris Prior in the author's original trilogy allowed readers to grow fond of this fiercely protective yet guarded character. In this aptly numbered collection of four stories, all told from the perspective of Four (aka Tobias Eaton), readers receive an inside look at how he came to be a Dauntless instructor in the first place, got his name, uncovered the plot by Jeanine Matthews to attack the Abnegation faction, and fell in love with Tris. Divergent fans will thoroughly enjoy this extra bit of backstory, which is filled with names and places that became beloved in Roth's bestselling trilogy. Roth's storytelling retains the same mix of tension, uncertainty, and hope that made the original stories irresistible. For those who were brokenhearted to find themselves at the last page of Allegiant, this brief look back through Four's eyes will be a welcome trip down memory lane. Ages 14–up. Agent: Joanna Volpe, New Leaf Literary & Media. (July)
ALA Booklist
“Fans of Divergent who can’t get enough—and maybe even the rare reader who missed the first rush—will snap up this relatively stand-alone story collection told from the perspective of Tobias (aka Four).””

I think for writing this after the fact of the other ones it was pretty good. I think that it definitely could
have been better considering that she originally wanted the Divergent Collection to be from Tobias's point of view. As I said though, for her writing this after all the other Divergent books and with assuming
that everyone reading this has already read the other books there was a lot of things she did not have
to include, but it made the book seem more like a rough draft than a story. Overall I was pleased, but I
think that more could have been done here. Tobias's character could have been given more.

This book is amazing! It has given me a whole new perspective on Divergent and a whole new outlook on Four (aka Tobias) One suggestion, if you haven't read the trilogy or at the lest, Divergent, don't read this book. This book won't make sense, but if you have READ IT!! I got it yesterdat and I am halfway through, Veronica Roth did an amazing job, as usual. Overall, this is a spectacular book and I recommend it to anyone.

    3.5 stars

Four: A Divergent Collection is a good read for fans of Four. "The Transfer" follows Four from his last days in Abnegation to his early days of initiation, "The Initiate" continues his journey to becoming an official member of Dauntless, "The Son" shows his early days as a Dauntless member and his decision to teach initiates, and "The Traitor" gives us a glimpse into his life during Tris's period of initiation. There are also exclusive scenes at the back that show some more Divergent scenes from Four's perspective. It's total Four fan service packaged neatly into a book for our enjoyment.

I think I love Four's character more than Tris's. He claims that he's not good at dealing with people, but he has this air about him that makes him a compelling character. Other than the fact that he's a totally hot guy and I love him (don't tell my boyfriend!), he's a rational and plans his actions more often than he lets his impulses take over. And his hardworking nature is a quality that I find very sexy in a guy. It's been a wonderful experience getting to see more sides to his character—from the "timid, not-sure-of-himself" boy that he was in Abnegation into the strong, driven Four that we know and love from Divergent. There's also this cute phase where he becomes interested in girls and tries to figure them out. Plus, seeing Four go through initiation training? That's hot stuff. Enough said.

It does feel like Four: A Divergent Collection is more like a series of snapshots into Four's life before and after Tris enters his life than a collection of stories. While there is the shady business between Max and Jeanine linking the stories, it doesn't feel like there is a coherent plot to any of them. It was also disorienting to jump in time from one story to the next (mostly because I want to know what happens in between!!! >_<). Furthermore, as much as I enjoyed learning about Four, I don't feel like we really got to learn as much about his character as we could have. While we learn about some of his motivations, he had to tell me that. The stories don't quite capture his thoughts and feelings at some important moments.

Essentially, what I'm saying is that this should have been a novel, but it's not. Because Four wasn't the right character for the story that Veronica Roth wanted to tell (as she mentions in the Introduction). So I should be, and am, very happy that this collection came out. Because, Four.

As it is, however, it's missing a lot of qualities that made me fall in love with Divergent: the epic world building, vivid descriptions and actions, a compelling plot. This is a great supplement to the trilogy, but it's not strong enough to stand on its own. And that's why I'm giving it a 3-star rating. Okay, 3.5 stars because I really like Four and almost wish he was real and available.

Technically I give this a 4.7. I LOVE THE BEGINNING! Why he did what he did, the anger and confusion he felt towards his father and how he became the person he is in Divergent. Towards the end during the cross over I would have liked for his thoughts on Tris to be more intense. I honestly didn't feel like he felt there was a lot of chemistry between them. Plus I wasn't crazy how the book ended, it was kind of an awkward place

As just about anyone who knows me knows, I LOVED THE DIVERGENT SERIES!    That being said, I was thrilled when I learned Veronica Roth was writing Four.  I wanted to know more about him, what had transpired to make him the training instructor he was, the man he had become.   And those things  were revealed in the book Four.

Four was such a force in the series and a book hero any heroine or reader could fall in love with.   And it was so good to read about him again....sort of like touching base with an old friend.   Wow, his inner conflicts were many and his attachment to Tris completed him in many ways.  This collection of novellas told of Tobias Eaton's life before he chose his faction.  It explained why he chose Dauntless as his faction.  It revealed why he was as he was.   Told in short sections, the Transfer, The Initiate, The Son and the Traitor we catch a glimpse of the real Four, the human side of the man.

And after we hear his version of the story within, we were treated to three excerpts involving Tris,
First Jumper, Tris, Careful,Tris, and You Look Good, Tris.    This read is fast paced, it is easily read and it is enjoyable.
