PreS-Gr 2-- In four short episodes, two appealing animals experience the ups and downs of friendship. They trick each other, vastly overpack for a camping trip, miss seeing a spaceship from outer space because their eyes are shut, and run back and forth in hot weather to see who has the best hammock. Children will laugh at the silliness and enjoy being in on the jokes, such as seeing the spaceship land while Fox and Bear miss it. Well-placed pen-and-watercolor cartoons with plenty of white space suit the story. Although lacking the coziness and style of Lobel's ``Frog and Toad,'' (HarperCollins), this is an amusing addition for reading aloud or beginning readers. --Kathleen Odean, Moses Brown School, Providence, RI
