Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
Foxes bark like dogs and are a part of the dog family just as wolves and coyotes are. However, foxes are much smaller than wolves. Male foxes are called dogs and female foxes are called vixens. Although when sighting a fox you will think that his fur is red, it is actually made up of red, orange, gray, white, and tan colors. The coloration helps them to blend in with their surroundings for protection. Foxes live all over the world; there are six species living in North America. Unlike wolves who are carnivores, foxes will eat plants and animals, which make them omnivores. Part of the series "World of Mammals," this series teaches the reader about different mammals, using quick facts and lots of photographs. Although the terms that are defined in the glossary are not indicated in the text, an index, a glossary, a supplemental reading and internet site page make this a series worth looking at for older elementary collections and middle school classrooms with reluctant readers. Internet sites are reached by viewing facthound.com, a database that has already researched the sites and classified them according to age appropriateness. The code needed for accessing this website is given at the back of the text.
