Jeff peers out from his tent one night and sees what looks like a fox rooting through the trash, but it is not a fox. It is a dog, a dog who has obviously been mistreated by humans and is afraid to trust. Jeff and his family are camping in the Florida Keys and Jeff had begun to think that it was going to be a dull couple of weeks. His parents had met and married in the Keys and are taking a trip down memory lane, which Jeff would just as soon have skipped. Jeff sets about to win the confidence of the frightened, scrawny black dog he names Foxy. At the same time, he meets Amber. He thinks he may have found a friend, but Amber wants Foxy for herself and causes Jeff trouble at every turn. After an automobile accident, Jeff and his parents are hospitalized and Foxy disappears. Amber's attempts to trap Foxy for herself cause the dog to be injured. This story has an underlying environmental theme and contains moral lessons about selfishness, but what will keep the reader turning the pages is the suspense surrounding Foxy and the boy who loves him. 1997 (orig.
