Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Samuel J. Chmell, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This book thoroughly details the management of patients with hip fractures. Not only does it describe the most appropriate operations for given fractures, it also addresses all other aspects of these patients, including comorbidities, complications, and mental and social obstacles.
Purpose: The purpose is to go well beyond the standard orthopedic surgical treatise on hip fractures that only discuss surgical management. The well-done operation is only a part of the appropriate treatment of the hip fracture patient. In order to optimize outcomes, all of the patient's problems need to be identified and dealt with.
Audience: Orthopedic surgical residents (or registrars) in training as well as "the experienced community surgeons who are in the trenches and managing these fractures on a daily basis," are the intended audience, according to the author
Features: The book completely covers the subject of adult hip fractures, from epidemiology, preoperative assessment, and optimization to anesthesia and surgery to postoperative management and prevention of future fractures. While the book deals with a lot more than just the surgery, it by no means shortchanges the operative techniques. Diagrams, x-ray photos, and bibliography all complement the text well. This is worthwhile endeavor that is not duplicative.
Assessment: This book is valuable because it not only expertly instructs how to improve outcomes for adult hip fracture patients, it also teaches us a philosophy of going beyond our operation to treat the whole patient and even try to prevent future fractures by treating osteoporosis and helping patients avoid falls. For this complete approach, there is no match in the field.
