Overview

Marquardt and Eskilson (both teach art history at Eastern Illinois U.) have written a thematically organized text designed to accompany the standard chronological art history surveys used in the undergraduate classroom. Acknowledging their training in western art history, the authors nonetheless include many examples of prehistoric, Asian, and Native American art. The chapter topics include earth works, Christian pilgrimage, art and collecting, the spoils of war, and identity in contemporary art. Students will find this a thought-provoking text, where the authors acknowledge the transitory and contextual basis of many art historical maxims as they present currently accepted interpretations. The CD-ROM contains a variety of study tools. Each chapter is accompanied by study questions and bibliography. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
