Overview

Packets and frames for transmitting digital information are anything but new. They've been around for more than 40 years. What is new is the semiconductor technology applied to handling them.

Smaller, faster, cheaper electronics have opened new possibilities for information processing and communications services. Some are organized around very high speed packetized data or broadband transmission. The result has been a near-stampede to implement packet and frame techniques in many different forms.

The next wave of networking technology - broadband services based on packetized transmission and switching at gigabit per second rates - will carry us into the next century.

This is no time for a network operator to be confused. That's the purpose of this book: to help you - the network operator, planner, or manager - understand the question you will face about your next networking technology. The goal is an understanding of the concepts and the issues more than a familiarity with specific products.

Author Biography: William A. Flanagan is vice president of marketing and technology at FastCommunications Corp. where he guides product development and marketing strategy. He also represents the company at the Frame Relay Forum, seminars, and other industry events.
