Overview

A fresh start. A clean slate. That's what Mom said as I headed out the door to catch the annoyingly bright and infantile school bus. No one knows you, or anything about you, she said. You can be who you are-whoever you want to be. Now isn't that just great. I have the privilege of beginning ninth grade, the start of my high school career-or lack of career, more likely-as a complete zero, a nobody. No history, no personality, no best friend. touching story of teen coming to grips

There is much more behind adolescent Fran just starting at a new school in this fine first novel. Well-drawn characters and relationships, believable dialogue and plotlines, understated parallels between the protagonist's actions and those of a blind character she plays in a school production, Zen Buddhism and a frank yet tender look at the prolonged convulsions and nascent resolution surrounding severe loss on several fronts -- all these are here and more. Engagingly complex and tied up nicely at the end. My interest is piqued for more from this author.

    An insightful, entertaining first novel

Fran, the Second Time Around is about many things¿ being the new girl in town, dealing with guilt, tragedy, and forgiveness. As the book begins, Fran has moved to a new school and is worried about fitting in. She¿s a strong personality, smart and funny, and unique--a 12 year-old who¿s into boys, clothes, and meditation. She begins to make friends in the new town, but you have the sense that there¿s something beneath the surface. The second section of the book flashes back to the town she used to live in. There¿s a wonderful section about Fran¿s role as Helen Keller in the play The Miracle Worker. All of the excitement of being in a production comes through. If you like theater, you¿ll love this part. The section ends with an unexpected, understated calamity. In the third section, we learn how she comes to terms with the incident. It is fun to read, and contains important lessons about accepting what we can¿t change and living a full, rich life. I highly recommend the book.
