Overview

Truly the guides that show you what others only tell you, this book features stunning 3D and cutaway views of museums, cathedrals, and other must-see sights; detailed street maps; a handy phrase section; advice on the best places to eat, drink, shop, sleep, and be entertained; and a Survival Guide to help the traveler sort out essential information such as currency, transportation, and communications. As world traveler and TV personality Michael Palin says, "the Eyewitness Travel Guides are irresistibly seductive.... They also deliver where it matters most -- uncluttered and accurate information." A cavalcade of Gallic history, French countryside, Parisian sights and savory cuisine, DK's Eyewitness Travel Guide: France captures all that this magnificent European destination has to offer. With more than 1400 color photographs, this handbook to France contains street-by-street maps and illustrated aerial views guiding you to all points of interest. In the ninety-page Paris chapter, view the Musee du Louvre in a four-page overview highlighted by an overview of the layout, photos of the chief masterworks, and summaries of its remarkable collections. The guide goes on to spotlight such sights as Ameins Cathedral, Mont-St-Michel, Chateau de Chenonceau, and the Abbaye de Fontenay, to mention only a few. Among the diverting driving tours featured is the Alsace Route du Vin, a picturesque wine tour through historic villages, Renaissance fountains, and renowned wineries producing delicate Alsatian wines. The French landscape is showcased throughout, from Brittany's coastline and its wildlife habitats to the caves of the Dordogne in southwestern France, including depictions of prehistoric cavepaintings. In addition, the guide showcases the sights and attractions to be found in Monaco and on the island of Corsica. Opening with an insightful historical overview of France spotlighting various periods in its sometimes turbulent history, as well as a timeline of its monarchs, this definitive guide covers the country's culture, personalities, food, art, nightlife, and each region like no other. Vive la France Eyewitness Travel Guide!

    A Must Buy!

This book, as well as the other DK Eyewitness Travel series books, are excellent. I purchased this book for a trip to Paris - it was precise on everything from historic sites, attractions, even down to the street/map details. This book is a FANTASTIC all-in-one!

Can't say enough WONDERFUL things about this book!

Beautiful pictures, informative and shows a little about SO much! Would never have gone to half the places if they hadn't previewed them so well!!!! I buy these books now EVERYTIME I go somewhere new - WELL worth it! Others travelling with us, ended up borrowing my book and discarding their Fodors, etc for mine. Could barely keep it in my room!

    Excellent book

This book is not only a traveller's guide but also the excellent source of history (at least a nice summary), geography, culture etc. As all DK books, it has superior graphic composition . I recommend this book to everyone who wants to know more about France and Europe. I miss, though, Germany travel guide that would be a nice addition to that collection.
