Overview

This release by Jean-Claude Casadesus -- nephew of Poulenc's longtime friend, Robert Casadesus -- is especially welcome in 1999, the centenary of the composer's birth. Casadesus has stayed in Lille for well over twenty years, building the local orchestra into one of France's finest. Yet the maestro is curiously uncelebrated, partly because Lille is a region of left-wing political forces loathed by Parisian bigwigs, and partly because French musical snobs hate family acts, which is all the more reason to value these idiomatic performances. The Organ Concerto, recorded on the splendid instrument of the Nôtre Dame Cathedral, has the appropriate frenzied force while the "Concert Champêtre" has a light touch, helped by the very discreet harpsichord soloist, Elisabeth Chojnacka. The minor but charming French Suite rounds off the program with some appealing Stravinskian overtones.
