Children's Literature - Ellen Welty
Frank sees an announcement on the bulletin board in the library at school describing a short story contest and he decides he would like to enter. His friend Fiona and the school librarian help him get started. The librarian gives Frank a story map to organize his ideas. He starts by listing his setting, characters, and then the beginning, middle and end of the story he has in mind. Fiona advises him to add some details and sensory information to the setting so that readers will understand just where the story begins and where it goes from there. Using her suggestions, he is able to start again with a good story beginning. After starting, he is able to quickly finish with his main story ideas; but when he re-reads the story, he realizes that it does not flow as smoothly as he wants. He makes some changes so that there are clear transitions and finishes the story that evening at home. When he shows it to Fiona the next day, she likes it. Using the story to demonstrate how to write a good story, the author has included a step-by-step guide along with a story map to help young writers get started. There is also a bibliography and a glossary. This title is part of the “Writing Builders” series, a series that would benefit most elementary and middle school students. A paperback edition that is more affordable is also available. Reviewer: Ellen Welty; Ages 7 to 10.
