School Library Journal
Gr 1—In this fun-filled fantasy, a longer narration on the left page advances the story and establishes a context for a few, short words and phrases on the right for beginning readers to decode. When Frank, a frog, finds a safari hat, he invites Mikey, a mouse, to join him in a hunt for wild animals. Peering through the grass is a sad boy who has lost his tiger, so Frank and Mikey look for it. They find a garden hose that appears to be its striped tail, and then they find a stuffed tiger. A dog runs by and grabs the toy in his mouth. They lurch for the dog's tail and try to tug the toy out of the animal's mouth, and then Frank tosses his hat as a decoy. The dog drops the tiger to chase it. Frank and Mikey set the tiger on the boy's doorstep, and he is very happy to see it. But then he tosses it so the dog can chase it and the fun resumes. The text is set beneath oil cartoon illustrations that evoke slapstick action and drama in a backyard story.—Laura Scott, Farmington Community Library, MI

Frank the frog and Mikey the mouse are playing in the tall grass when a young boy startles them. The boy is looking for his lost tiger. When the tiger does not respond to his calls, the boy is sad. Frank decides to help him find his tiger and Mikey reluctantly follows. First, they find a striped garden hose. Then they spot the stuffed tiger animal. Just then a dog runs toward them and grabs the tiger in his mouth. He ignores Frank's pleas to stop. When the dog runs by again, Frank grabs his tail and holds Mikey's hand. They enjoy a wild aerial ride before the dog stops. They try to get the tiger, but the dog 'will not let go. Frank throws his hat into the air and the dog takes off after it. Frank and Mikey return the tiger to the elated boy. The dog comes around the corner and the boy tosses the tiger for him to fetch. The friends laugh as they follow the dog for another ride on his tail. The large, brightly colored pictures add humor and contribute to the meaning of the text. Designed for beginning readers to share with an adult, the left page carries the storyline for the mature reader and the right page features a short sentence in larger print for the young child to read. A "Parent's Introduction" offers suggestions for reading together. Part of the "We Both Read" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
