Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Susan R. Shaffner
Frankie, his dog Max, and his friends Charlie and Louise are at a carnival. Frankie spends his last fifty cents in a soccer stall where his amazing kick into a bucket wins him an old soccer ball. On the way home, he and his friends stop at a park to play soccer and choose a ship-shaped jungle gym as the goal. When the prize ball hits the ship, it disappears into a vortex. Frankie and his friends follow the ball into the vortex and find themselves on a pirate ship. Frankie, his friends, and Max, who can now talk, are challenged to a soccer game against the pirates in which the losers will be marooned on a desert island. Lampard gives a play-by-play narrative of the game with the cheating pirates, but Frankie’s superior skill triumphs. They then walk the plank to exit the pirate world and find themselves back home where they wonder if it was all a dream, until they see the returned fifty cents has been changed into pirate gold. Lampard, a well-known footballer/soccer player, is a midfielder for Chelsea. Young fans may want to read his books along with older students who struggle with reading. There are anti-littering, no cheating messages as well as soccer adages. This is the first book in the “Frankie’s Magic Soccer Ball” series. Reviewer: Susan R. Shaffner; Ages 5 to 10.
