Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Do you stop to pick up a penny if you see one? I do, and it is probably because my grandmother used to say the same thing as Franklin's: "Find a penny, pick it up. All the day you'll have good luck." Franklin puts his in a bubble gum machine and all of the gumballs come out and fill up his cap. It is indeed his lucky day as he shares the bounty with his friends. Then the bounty becomes more like loot, because Mr. Mole has reported a theft of all his gumballs. Franklin tries to make restitution and pulls the pennies from his piggy bank to feed into the gumball machine. The ending takes a nice twist and teaches kids a lesson that honesty does indeed pay. A level 2 book in the "Kids Can Read" series. There is an opening note to teachers and parents explaining the three levels in the series.
