Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Simple episodes about growing up are featured in Franklin’s “Kids Can Read” series. Written for the beginning reader, they offer humor and stories kids can easily relate to. In this Level 2 tale, Franklin wants another pet but his mother says, “No more pets.” However, when Franklin and Bear go to the pond for a day of swimming they encounter a baby duckling that appears to have no family. At the end of the day, Franklin explains to the duck that he must go home, but that he will visit again the next day, but the duckling follows Franklin, and once at home, Franklin is left with the task of hiding and caring for the duck. Humor comes across as the duckling messes up Franklin’s room and raises suspicion from Franklin’s mother when it quacks. After a tiring night of caring for the duckling, Franklin’s sister discovers it and then Franklin’s parents find out about the duck. Luckily for Franklin, the duckling’s family comes to take it home. At that point, Franklin’s mother says he can get another pet because he took good care of the duck, but it is a tired Franklin who now says, “No! No more pets.” This overall fun read and other books in the “Franklin” series will be popular with young readers. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury
