Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristy Lyn Sutorius
Time is suddenly of the essence when Franklin finds a stopwatch in the family junk drawer. Franklin's father illustrates how the instrument works by challenging Franklin to hold his breath. Once the little turtle understands that "a stopwatch doesn't tell time. It times time," Franklin makes it a point to time everyone and everything he encounters. First, he times his mother's phone conversation. Then, hovering over him in the garden, Franklin times his dad's weeding, remarking, "You haven't done very much!" Franklin heads off to the park to time his friends, Bear and Beaver, at play. Curiously, these two are never given proper names. When the furry pals have had enough, they give Franklin a taste of his own medicine, timing him as he chooses a library book, reads, and walks from the ice cream parlor to the park. Sick of being pressured to do things quickly, Franklin determines that "sometimes a stopwatch needs to stop watching." The illustrations, although not as eye-catching as many of the new Disney/Pixar or Nickelodeon creations, pair well with the text to convey Franklin's sometimes bad attitude and his friends' exasperation. Part of the "Kids Can Read with Help" series, and based on the television episode, Franklin's Stopwatch, this easy reader will be loved by fans of Franklin's other books.
