Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carlee Hallman
This 25th anniversary edition about a turtle who is afraid of the dark and therefore will not climb inside his shell is introduced by letters from the author and the illustrator. They tell about creating this initial book, now a series, about Franklin the turtle. Franklin goes on a quest for help. He meets a duck who is afraid of water and wears water wings, a lion who is afraid of loud noises and wears earmuffs, a bird with a parachute, a polar bear with a snow suit, and then meets his mother who was afraid that he was lost. He told her about the other animals. After a cold supper, Franklin crawled inside his dark shell and "said a brave ?Good night.' And then when nobody was looking, Franklin the turtle turned on his night light." The pictures show endearing characters, with Franklin standing up like a little boy. End pages tell of more books and a TV show about Franklin that continue to flesh out his character. There are many Franklin spin-offs such as toys, backpacks, and even bedding. A Franklin Children's Garden is in Toronto, Ontario. Franklin has been used to support literacy campaigns, parks, and other causes. In spite of all the hype and cute pictures, I find this story too implausible for our scientific age. Reviewer: Carlee Hallman
