Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Join Franklin and his friends for six adventures, which are based on several of the television series' episodes. Franklin the turtle, originally created by writer Paulette Bourgeois and illustrator Brenda Clark, deals with different challenges in amusing ways. Each story begins with a couple statements, such as that Franklin knows how to count to two and tie his shoes (oddly, in the illustrations, Franklin does not have shoes on his feet). Then, the problem or conflict is stated. For instance, in the first story, Franklin knows how to ride a scooter but he does not own one. His challenge is to figure out a way to get a scooter. A few of the stories have an abrupt storyline such as the one about the contest. Readers must infer that the contest involves doing something continuously for five hours and that the magazine is sponsoring the contest. The book is part of the "Kids Can Read" series. The text is geared for early readers but the flow of the stories can be difficult to follow. Younger children will probably enjoy looking at the brightly colored illustrations and hearing the stories read aloud. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
