Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Franklin's School Treasury by Paulette Bourgeois, illus. by Brenda Clark, gathers the previously published Franklin Goes to School, Franklin's School Play, Franklin's Class Trip and Franklin's Neighborhood in one handy paper-over-board volume. ( Mar.) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Children's Literature
As with most other Franklin tales, Franklin's School Treasury is a collection of four charming, fun-filled Franklin adventures that is sure to be a hit with parents and children alike. In "Franklin Goes to School," Franklin's initial excitement turns into a case of the jitters as he anticipates his very first day of kindergarten. Fearing that he is not as smart or well-prepared as his friends, he reluctantly boards the school bus. His fears are quickly put to rest at school and the teacher helps him see that he has special qualities of his own. The second story, "Franklin's School Play," touches on the insecurities many of us feel when we try something new. Franklin plays the Nutcracker Prince, but when it's time to perform on stage, his legs turn to Jell-O and his lines come out as a mere whisper. His friend Badger steps in to help and Franklin realizes that he can do it after all. In Franklin's first field trip to a museum, "Franklin's Class Trip," he can barely contain his excitement. That is, until he finds out that there are real, live dinosaurs big enough to eat trees for breakfast. He and snail, a fellow classmate, try to hide their reluctance to see the giant lizards, but what a surprise¾there are no real dinosaurs, only skeletons. In "Franklin's Neighborhood," Franklin is assigned a project at school in which he is to draw a picture of his favorite thing in the neighborhood. After agonizing and visiting every possible spot, he finds his answer—it is the people (which is what I like so much about this book). Each story is as terrific as the next, and all send a well-meaning message to kids. Ideal for preschoolers as well as early readers, Franklin is a real winner.2001, Kids Can Press, $15.95.
