From the Publisher
This Level 2 “Kids Can Read” with Help Franklin book is meant for students who have some reading skills but may still need help. Although the story is thirty-two pages long with some conversation, varied sentences and increased vocabulary, it is still full of repetition and visual clues which will help beginning readers ? .The illustrations are very well done ? [and] add not only visual appeal but also important information to the text.

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Since Franklin's move to TV, even more early reader books have featured him and his friends. In this story, Franklin learns about a soapbox derby and, with his friend Bear, builds a car to enter the race. The car is lopsided and far from fancy. It also refuses to budge when the race starts. Then when Bear and Franklin give it a good push, it heads off on its own, careening along and bumping other cars until just the box crosses the finish line. The duo do not win the (the winner has to be in the car in order to claim the prize) but they sure had fun. A level 2 book in the "Kids Can Read" series. There is an opening note to teachers and parents explaining the three levels in the series.
