Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Gr 2-4-In this picture-book glimpse at 12,000 years of history, Clement uses a trip to the museum as an excuse for some lame jokes. The nameless protagonist and his dog begin at an exhibit on skeletons and quickly progress through the Ice Age, ancient Egypt, Rome, the Middle Ages, and more, until they reach the lunar landing. Egypt provokes the usual mummy and daddy joke and a castle moat prompts a humorous aside about being a great way to avoid door-to-door salesmen. The artwork is colorful with a lively line and the boy and his dog look pretty cool with their matching opaque geek glasses. They're just not cool enough to save this book.-Judith Gloyer, Milwaukee Public Library Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Clement (Grandpa's Teeth, 1998, etc.) serves up another set of familiar events gone awry. For a bespectacled young narrator and his similarly adorned canine sidekick (Frank), a museum visit becomes not only a tour through history and prehistory, but an opportunity to deliver quips at each stop: lucky that Newton wasn't sitting under a coconut tree, why go all the way to the Moon to leave footprints when there's some nice wet cement down the street, with so many mummies around, what became of all the daddies, etc. Literal, elaborately detailed paintings flesh out the imaginative flights, and the book ends with the cleverest twist of all: cheerfully misunderstanding the parental suggestion that he would "make history" by cleaning his room, the lad designs an automatic room tidier. Children who prefer their humor broad will be heartily amused. (Picture book. 6-8)
