"Good background information on archeology mixed with a 'whodunit' story will entice the reluctant reader."
Children's Literature - Cynthia Levinson
On a school trip to the museum in Alberta, Trevor, the first person narrator leans too far over to inspect the jawbone of a dinosaur fossil and brings down the entire structure. His buddies Nick and Robyn are not surprised at his clumsiness. But, no problem! The paleontologist guide, who is the mother of another classmate Hailey, explains that the model is plastic. The opening does not set up the plot, however. The real issue is revealed several chapters later when a graduate student paleontologist, Mr. Joe, mentions that the state is reducing funding for digs, possibly resulting in the end of his research and in Hailey and her mother having to move. To raise funds, Robyn, improbably, organizes a school fair at which she tells fortunes, some of which come true. The story becomes a mystery when Mr. Joe discovers bones of an Ichthylobuttosaur—nicknamed Itchy Butt, undoubtedly to please male readers—previously found only south of the border in South Dakota. The bones are sure to attract funding. But are they real? Or did Mr. Joe plant them to secure funding for his research? Or did Robyn plant them, for complicated reasons, to protect her identity as a fortune-teller? Through incisive sleuthing, Trevor deduces that the real culprit is Hailey, who does not want to move. The story is methodically plotted, conveys a modicum of information about dinosaurs in a heavy-handed way, and provides sufficient red herrings to make the mystery mildly suspenseful. The characters are flat but not unappealing. This is an inoffensive, not entirely believable book that may hold the interest of readers, both male and female. Reviewer: Cynthia Levinson

Meet the Author

Michele Martin Bossley was born in Boston, Massachusetts, but grew up in Calgary, Alberta. Her sixth grade teacher encouraged her to write down the stories she enjoyed creating, but it wasn't until high school that Michele really began to consider writing as a career. She graduated from the University of Calgary in 1991, and began working seriously on writing children's books.

Michele is the author of eighteen novels for young people. Ten of her books have been chosen by the Canadian Children's Book Centre for the Our Choice list. Others have been nominated for the Manitoba and Alberta Reader's Choice Award, and she was runner-up for the 1997 Writer's Guild of Alberta R. Ross Annett Children's Literature award.

Many of Michele's books focus on different sports. As a former athlete, she was involved in synchronized swimming in her teens and competitive swimming in university. She has also coached young swimmers, in addition to coaching her twin sons' soccer and hockey teams, and draws on much of that experience for her books.

A frequent speaker at writing conferences and schools, Michele divides her time between writing and parenting her four sons. She lives in Calgary, Alberta.

A few feet from my face, huge jaws smiled menacingly, revealing curved sharp teeth perfect for tearing flesh. The creature looked ready to pounce if I moved so much as a baby finger.

"That is one big ugly dude," my cousin Nick said, shaking his spiky black hair out of his face.
