Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Two eighth-grade misfits-one physically impaired, the other with a learning disability-become fast friends in a story PW found ``choked with clichs and stereotypes.'' Ages 10-14. (May)
Children's Literature
Big, dumb Max and little, brainy Freak become unlikely best friends in Rodman Philbrick's Freak the Mighty. Like knights in the Arthurian legends Freak loves, they battle bullies, including Max's felon father. When Freak's strange disease finally claims him, Max is able to say good-bye and continue with a new sense of his own worth, thanks to his friend. This powerful novel is the basis for the movie "The Mighty."
Children's Literature
Two other heroes become larger than life in Freak the Mighty when Max Kane, a boy of big stature and slow mind meets Kevin, a dwarf with genius ability. Max puts Kevin on his shoulders, and they become victorious against drug addicts, bullies and killers. They seem almost invincible until the book's end where the upbeat writing and unlikely heroism rescues the novel from sadness.
School Library Journal
Gr 6-9-A wonderful story of triumph over imperfection, shame, and loss. Large, awkward, learning-disabled Maxwell Kane, whose father is in prison for murdering his mother, and crippled, undersized Kevin are both mocked by their peers; the cruel taunting they endure is all too realistic and believable. The boys establish a friendship-and a partnership. Kevin defends them with his intelligence, while Max is his friend's ``legs,'' affording him a chance to participate in the larger world. Inspired by tales of King Arthur, they become knights fighting for good and true causes. But Kevin's illness progresses, and when he dies, Max is left with the memories of an extraordinary relationship and, perhaps, the insight to think positively about himself and his future. The author writes with empathy, honoring the possibilities of even peripheral characters; Kevin and Max are memorable and luminous. Many YA novels deal with the effects of a friend dying, but this one is somewhat different and very special.-Libby K. White, Schenectady County Public Library, NY

    great!

This book is wonderful! I read it with my fifth grade students as a read aloud as they all read along in their own books. There are many different topics and lessons that can be used in this book. In addition, I used this book for a realistic fiction unit and paired it with our realistic fiction writing piece. This book is funny, because it is from the point of view from an eighth grade student. The students loved reading a book from this point of view. Not only is this book hilarious, but it is touching, serious and deals with real life situations that many urban children can relate to. In the end, the students and I loved this book and highly recommend it to students aged 10 and up. It was a wonderful book!!!!!

A Wonderful Book About Being Different

This book was assigned summer 2008 reading for my soon-to-be 7th grader. The book report was due on the first day of school. He enjoyed it and so did I. We are now reading "Max the Mighty,' the sequel to "Freak the Mighty."Read on.If you know a kid who is a little different, may be has a learning disability, this is a great book for him or her.If you know a kid who thinks everybody is the same and his or her viewpoint is all that matters, this is a good book. for him or her.If you know someone who wants to laugh and cry while they read. Get lost in the story and not wonder how many pages it is, this a good book for him or her.

Wonderful, heartwarming story of opposites attracting and finding some common ground. The main characters reflect the atmosphere of schools and friendships today. Wonderful, wonderful story. I used this story as a Readers theater piece.

I had to read this book for school and it was one of the best books I had to read for school ever! It starts out fun, gets scary, and then shocks you with a super sad ending. I can't wait to read Max the Mighty, the next book in the series. I recommend this book for everyone. All ages. This is a GREAT book! :)

    A must read

    A must read
The book I read was Freak the Mighty it's by Rodman Philbrick. This book is nonfiction. I choose this book because it looked good.
This book is about how two kids from different worlds become friends. The main characters are max and kiven. The theme is when you put your mind to it you can do anything.
This book is so good. I liked it because it's funny in some parts and sad in others. My favorite character was Kevin because he was funny and he never gave up. I learn that if you put your mind to it anything is possible.
My opinion about this book is that it was great. I would recommend this book to anyone. I enjoyed it and I hope you do to.

I liked the book and it is really good for little kids to read and anyone else.

Freak the Might by Rodman Philbrick

The introduction of this particular story doesn't necessarily give the whole idea of the theme of the book . It kind of dives immediately into the story about these two friends that over come disadvantages.
Freak is a little boy that has Morquio. His real name is Kevin and has a friend named Maxwell and he has dyslexia. The reason why they became friends was because they were always getting picked on at school. Maxwell's dad is in jail because he did something bad. Maxwell lives with is grandparents Grim and Gram.
The characters are Maxwell, Kevin, Fair Gwen, Grim, Gram, and Maxwell's dad. It is about two boys with disadvantages and something big happens at about the end of the story. The setting is in a little town. The theme is in an old city. The writing is fiction.
Again Freak is a little boy with a disease and his friend Maxwell has dyslexia. Maxwell and Freak became friends because they got made fun of. They both help each other out. Again this book is good for little kids and a book to maybe start a book club.
The reason why I liked this book was because it was pretty interesting. There were some parts I was really wanting to figure out what happened before it happened. Another reason why I liked the story was because I was on the edge of my seat. I liked the book more in 6th grade rather than junior high.

This is a good book, and has some errors, but it follows the story.

    Freak the Mighty Review
    Author of book: Rodman Philbrick
    3 stars
In this story, the author didn't give the theme away right out of the gate. It just basically went into an immediate story about these two kids who struggle with different sicknesses and also struggle with bullies in their school. Maxwell doesn't do well in school because he has a disease called Dyslexia. Then, there is his friend, Kevin, who is very smart. He also struggles with Morquio.
These two kids named Kevin and Maxwell get bullied a lot and become friends by actually getting chased by a bully named Blade, also known as Tony D. Kevin, who is very short and has Morquio, but is really smart. Then, there is Maxwell, he has many nicknames but his main one is The Kicker, he is very tall but he has a disease called Dyslexia. Kevin lives with his mother, named the Fair Gwen. Maxwell lives with his grandparents because his father, Killer Kane, is in jail for killing his mother.
My overall review of this book is that it is a good book. It is easy to point out that there were errors, but I think that it was meant to be for lower grades instead of junior-high level of school.
Again, Maxwell has Dyslexia and is very tall, and Kevin has Morquio and is very short. They become friends because they were both bullied in their school.
It was very interesting and had a lot of suspense. There were times in the story that I wanted to figure out what would happen before it happened. The only issue I have with the book is that it doesn't suit the junior-high level because I recognized errors in the story that I think actually was apart of Maxwell's journal.
Also I feel as that I anyone writes a journal, They don't care if they spell something wrong or anything like that. I may be wrong in this situation, but I feel as that this story would be similar to Maxwell's journal.

    Freak The Mighty

    Book Review Outline
Book title and author: Freak the Mighty By: Rodman Philbrick.
Title of review: Freak the Mighty!(: By: The Amazing..Hannah Short
    Number of stars (1 to 5): 4/5

    Introduction
Kevin is brilliant, but his body is so crippled by birth defects that he has to wear braces on his legs. Max is huge and powerful, but he has been so scarred by life that he feels dumb and worthless. Independently, each boy seems like half a person, but when they meet the summer before eighth grade starts, they join together, becoming inseparable friends as Freak the Mighty.
Description and summary of main points
Max and Kevin met for the first time when they were both in day care. Then Kevin stopped coming to day care, and the boys lost contact until they saw one another in third grade. The summer before eighth grade, Kevin and his mother moved in next door to Max's grandparents' house, where he lived in the basement. The boys meet again when Max helps Kevin get his mechanical bird from the tree where it is stuck. The two boys became very good friends. They helped each other out when they needed it. Then one night Max's dad kidnapped him and Kevin helped him out and saved him. Then Kevin got really sick and had to spend many nights in the hospital. And he died. After he died Maxwell's life went down. He had nobody to talk to or have as a best friend. Maxwell wrote a book about his fun activities with Kevin in the empty book Kevin gave him.

Have to read if your having troubles in life!

This book is amazing. It will leave you crying. It will make you smile. It will make you laugh. This is the best book i have ever read. It is about a boy named Max and he is 5'10" and he meets this boy named Kevin (Freak). They become best friends and can't get away from each other. People make fun of them but they move on. Then it's Kevin's birthday party. And a fatal accident occurs. You have to read it to get more details. This book made my day and will teach you lessons. It taught me lessons. To not make fun of people because they might come back in a worse way. If you are having problems in life, read this book. It will make you feel either better or worse about yourself. By, Omar P.
