Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
This is a better book than its cover portrays. It is full of interesting and true stories of people, animals, planes, and buildings and their encounters with hurricanes, thunderstorms, snowstorms, floods, and the like. As the recipient of several hundred frogs after a severe thunderstorm triggered by a tornado, I wasn't surprised at stories of folks finding a refrigerator on a bank roof, a mop in a car, or a canceled check in a field hundreds of miles away. I found the story of Weela, the Ken-L-Ration Dog Hero of 1993, fascinating. She apparently saved thirteen horses, thirty people, and twenty-five dogs in a severe flood. After moaning and groaning through last winter's 221 inches of snow here in Japan, I'm glad I wasn't in Tamarack's 451 inches in one month! This is a great book for an earth science unit or for any elementary class. I can imagine reading a bit each day. 2000, Aladdin Books, $4.99. Ages 10 to 12. Reviewer: J. Natural disasters--those moments in time when we realize that our lives can be altered in just a few seconds. Natural disasters can be terrifying and have provided some of the strangest events in history. Consider the time a tornado carried a man 50 feet through a second story window into his neighbor's living room without killing the man or his neighbors, or the time the town of Indianola, Texas was destroyed by a hurricane in 1886, never to be rebuilt again. The freaky facts behind tornadoes, hurricanes, thunderstorms, droughts, floods and blizzards are provided, including lifesaving tips, tales of heroes and common myths. For those inquiring minds that want to know more about these events, this book is a great place to start. 2000, Aladdin,
