    Freckleface Strawberry

I loved this wonderful book! It portrayed everything I felt growing up as the only freckleface redhead in my family and at my school. I bought this book in hopes of passing it on to any other freckleface redhead child I might run into to let them know just what a special one-of-a-kind creation God made.

    Frecklefaced Strawberry

I read to a group of 4 & 5 year olds every week. They loved both
of the books in the "Frecklefaced" series!

    Love it!

For little girls, like myself, who grew up self-conscious of their freckles, this book is adorably confidence building!
I HAD to get it for my niece, the newest generation of freckle faced girls, who should love her freckles because they are adorable.

    more from this reviewer

my daughter loved this, and loves her freckles now!

Freckleface Strawberry, aka Julianne Moore, is a cute story about accepting yourself the way you are. Freckleface Strawberry is teased about her freckles constantly, so she tries different ways to hide them, before ultimately hiding herself. She finds that her classmates miss her, and she accepts her freckles in the end. Nicely illustrated and very well done, my daughter loves this book and her freckles.

    Freckles that horrible, huh?

If you want a kid with freckles to feel like some kind of diseased circus freak, this is the book to read to him or her. I had a faceful of them as a child. Sure, I was teased - kids will find any excuse to ridicule one another - but I also heard such terms as 'adorable' and 'cute' on numerous occasions. And never once did I have the experience of seeing an infant bust a gut laughing because my freckles were just the funniest thing she ever saw. This poor character is exposed to such a merciless stream of negative comments it's a miracle she doesn't go off the deep end. Such taunts range from 'What happened to you?' to 'Can I smell them?' At the end, when she is portrayed as an adult, even her husband has nothing positive to say about her freckles and instead pretends they're just 'some dirt.' That girl clearly needed supernaturally thick skin in order to become a well-adjusted adult, considering the constant barrage of negativity she had to endure.

    Negative Message

As a frecklefaced red-head I picked up this book with enthusiasm and ended up horrified. This book gives the impression that freckles are something to be ashamed of or hide. 'Just live with it' indicates that some physical traits are not valued or desired, but instead are just bearable and even with freckles you can somehow muster through life. What an awful message. Marring a blonde man, it is quite possible that we will have freklefaced strawberry children. I would NEVER read this book to them. As an educator, I am equally appalled that the approach to personal differences portrayed in this book was even published.

    A little sad

This was a present given to my own red headed and freckled young daughter by her grandmother, and I stopped reading it to her mid story. We have always told our daughter her freckles and red hair were beautiful and unique. She has never been exposed to the ridicule the character is, and I was disappointed that no where in the book was the character given any positive reinforcement from her parents or family. I believe a positive self-image and confidence come from the parents and there was none of that here.

    Freckles and Friendship

I had freckles when I was young. I caught them from Vicki who lived down the street. That's what everybody said anyhow. I used to try to count my freckles, but as soon as I had them all counted I would find more. Counting was impossible, and there was no way to make them go away. . .. I tried everything, just like in this book. Freckle Face Strawberry has LOTS of freckles, so many that everybody notices, and everybody has something to say. It's a great book for everyone speckled or plain. The pictures are bright and the story flows well. It will be read over and over again.

    A LESSON IN FRIENDSHIP

This debut children's book by acclaimed actress Julianne Moore teaches youngsters a valuable lesson - '...the things that make you different also make you YOU.' In this case the 7-year-old heroine known as 'Freckleface Strawberry' is covered with freckles. Not only that but her hair is red, not auburn but really, really red. She has no idea where her freckles came from as her mother, father, and sister don't have any. Nonetheless, there they are and they show no signs of going away. In many ways she is very much like her friends - she is short, she just lost another tooth, and she can ride a bike. But, to her dismay these friends always have something to say about her freckles. Someone says she's 'dotted ' another asks to smell them. So, she tries everything she can think of to get rid of those troublesome spots. Nothing works, which is when she learns the meaning of true friendship. Illustrations by LeUyen Pham are bright, perky, and alive. - Gail Cooke
