Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Laura Backman
How do you empower a young child to deal with a bully? This title provides a helpful start. Young Freda wears her new pink shoes to school. There, one of the boys teases her. "Funny Feet! Funny Feet!" he chants. When Freda tells her mom she does not want to wear her pink shoes to school anymore, helpful suggestions from adults and friends ensue. In the end it is Freda who stops the bullying. A twist at the end leaves readers satisfied. Picture prompts serve as visual reminders of the four problem solving steps including, "Don't Listen; Walk Away; Get Help; Tell Them to Stop." Preschoolers will clearly comprehend the story while slightly older, beginning readers will enjoy the book with a deeper understanding. At just twenty-eight pages, it is long enough to present the story and short enough to keep young readers engaged. Stuart, a visual learning specialist, has written several titles in the "I See I Learn" series to help young children learn emotional skills. The problems are simple but relevant to young children. Each book in the series includes a relatable story and summary, a map of the neighborhood, discussion points for a child to engage in with a teacher or parent, and information for adults at the back about visual learning and young children. Useful both at home and in a classroom this title provides a good starting point to help children identify and deal with bullying. Reviewer: Laura Backman
