Freddy the pig, Jinx the cat, Charles the rooster, Georgie the dog, Cousin Augustus the mouse, Uncle Ben, and Mrs. Peppercorn take a daring journey to Mars in Uncle Ben's space ship. On their way, Mrs. Peppercorn messes with the controls and gets them off track, but finally they reach Mars. Or do they? Where they land has nothing but trees that look burnt. They also see many different kinds of Martians. One resembles a man, but they know that couldn't possibly be! Another Martian is very short with a black jacket and yellow shoes. Meanwhile, back at the Bean Farm, Mr. and Mrs. Bean are having some problems of their own. Younger elementary children will enjoy this easy-to-read entry in "Freddy" series. 2002 (orig. 1953), Puffin/Penguin, Ages 6 to 8.

Meet the Author

Walter R. Brooks (18861958) is the beloved author of 26 books about Freddy the Pig. Born in upstate New York, he attended the University of Rochester before going to work with the American Red Cross and editing for magazines, including The New Yorker. In addition to the Freddy books, Brooks created the character Mister Ed the talking horse.
