Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leona Illig
What better way to achieve happiness than by getting yourself appointed King? Although Freddy, an elementary school kid, did not plot this career move for himself, he instantly settles down into enjoying his new role as the leader of the alien planet, "Flurb." Prior to being crowned King, Freddy had had to put up with a less-than-ideal life as a so-so student and brother of an obnoxious older sister named Babette. But after Freddy and his entire family are abducted by aliens and transported to Flurb, life changes for everyone. Freddy is amazed to discover that although he is worshipped by the citizens of Flurb, he is also the target of an evil wizard named "Wizbad" who wants his job. Freddy has to keep his wits about him as he engineers his family's escape from the wizard's jungle, and proves that he can be a leader who will uphold the planet's primary directive: to encourage uncontrolled laughter throughout the kingdom. This book, which is the first in a series, tells the story of Freddy and Flurb in an engaging, humorous style. There is nothing scary or sinister in this tale of alien abduction, and readers looking for a lightweight, entertaining read should enjoy this story. In this advance copy from uncorrected proofs, grammatical errors were found on several pages. In addition, the book switched its point of view several times (from second person to third), thus adding an element of confusion. One wonders why the author did not choose to tell the entire story from Freddy's point of view, since he is the most interesting character. Reviewer: Leona Illig
Kirkus Reviews

Freddy will be the first to say he screws things up...well, not thefirst—that would be Babette, his evil older sister. She delights in comparing her perfect report cards to Freddy's less-than-perfect ones by doing dramatic readings at dinner. In order to get to the newest report cards first, Freddy prepares a terrifying belch-symphony for Babette. Unbeknownst to any of the family, this draws extraterrestrial attention. One night they are abducted from their beds and zipped away to the planet Flurb, where retiring King Wormola has appointed Freddy his successor...much to royal wizard Wizbad's (not to mention Babette's) chagrin. Can Freddy survive the worshipful adoration of the bizarre Flurbians—not to mention a planet where the buildings are alive, his second-in-command wants him dead and laughter is prized above even Yootleturds? Hannan, author of the Super Goofballs series and creator of Nickelodeon's animated series CatDog, kicks off a new series of absurdly snarky and gross middle-grade novels aimed at those who don't like to read but love a good burp joke.Useful, if not for every reader.(Science fiction/humor. 6-10)
