Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heidi Hauser Green
Get ready for another great animal adventure in the fifth book of the "Golden Hamster Saga." Freddy the famous hamster has his curiosity piqued by the sight of a hamster lurking in the pocket of a mysterious mustachioed gentleman sitting near him at the theater. However, the powerful smell of plastic emanating from the odd hamster is disturbing—and why does he not respond to Freddy's attempts at communicating with him through the usual interanimal telepathic means? Distracted by a throng of admirers, Freddy loses track of the pair before he can answer the questions raised by this encounter. But he does not have to wait long before he meets the pair again. The stranger, Signor Goldoni, and his diminutive robot Tjark appear at Freddy's apartment the next day. They have an exciting albeit unusual request: that Freddy travel back in time. It seems Signor Goldoni is a scientist with a problem. His son is gravely ill and the only possible cure must come from the DNA of an early ancestor. Goldoni believes that while humans cannot travel through time, animals can (under certain conditions) and that Freddy is smart enough to help him get the DNA sample he needs. Freddy is skeptical, until he hears that the journey will take him to Assyria (Syria), a place of mythic good fortune for his species. Soon, the hamster and his usual colleagues—the wise house cat Sir William, the jester-like guinea pigs Enrico and Caruso—as well as his new unusual colleague, the robot Tjark, are strapped in and on their way to Syria at the time of the Holy Crusades. The clock is ticking! Can they get there and back in time? Will their mission be successful? How will they keep from being eaten first?Dietlof Reiche's animal characters are believable and likable, and the conclusion is satisfying and appropriate.

Meet the Author

Dietlof Reiche's middle-grade and young adult novels have garnered many awards in his native Germany, including the German Juvenile Literature Award and the Oldenburg's Children's Book Prize.

Born in Dresden, Germany, in 1942, Reiche spent his early childhood in the village of Nördlingen, the town where his first historical novel Der Bleisiegelfälscher (The Lead Seal Counterfeiter), is set. Before becoming a full-time writer of children's books, Reiche studied engineering. He later took an academic position at Darmstadt Technical University, followed by studies in sociology, and work as a graphic designer.

Many of Reiche's books are historical fiction, but he also enjoys mixing history with fantastic elements, and often brings his wonderful sense of humor and his concern for the environment to his books.

In Reiche's exciting new novel Ghost Ship, he blends contemporary life with history and the supernatural to create one captivating adventure. His Golden Hamster Saga series: I, Freddy; Freddy in Peril; Freddy to the Rescue; and the forthcoming, Freddy and the Ferocious Ferrets is hilariously narrated by Freddy the Golden hamster, and was inspired by memories of the numerous pet hamsters Reiche had as a child.

Dietlof Reiche lives with his wife in Hamburg, Germany.

Mr Cepeda received his BFA in illustration from California State University, Long Beach in 1992 and also studied Engineering at Cornell University. He is the illustrator of awarding-winning picture books such as What a Truly Cool World and Nappy Hair.
