Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This exciting exhibition catalog is worthy of its subject. Genius technician and colorist, master at capturing detail as well as ``the sublime,'' successful showman, adventurer, and accomplished amateur architect, Church ranks as one of the leading figures in 19th-century American art. Kelly and Ryan have written outstanding essays on the artist's career and the creation of ``Olana,'' his Persian-inspired home. In one fascinating and unusual offering, Gould explores Church's scientific ``world view'' and considers how it was profoundly challenged by Darwin's writings. The nearly 50 glorious color plates are supplemented by over twice as many color and black-and-white illustrations. Useful appendixes include an unfinished but annotated biography of Church by a close friend, an exhibition checklist, and a chronology. The catalog is a blockbuster, reminiscent of one of Church's monumental paintings and worthy of emulation in its thorough and somewhat unconventional approach. Highly recommended.--Kathleen Eagen Johnson, Historic Hudson Valley, Tarrytown, N . Y .
