Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Debbie Levy
This collection of previously published essays addresses four broad questions relating to the constitutional right to freedom of speech. A chapter entitled "Should Free Speech Be Limited?" covers issues as diverse as flag burning, hate speech, speech codes on college campuses, and pornography. Another chapter is titled "Is Free Speech Threatened?" and it examines concentration of ownership in the media industry, library Internet filters, campaign finance rules, and press coverage of the government. A third chapter, "Does the War on Terror Threaten Free Speech?" addresses the freedom to criticize a government's wartime policies, the Patriot Act, and press coverage of the Iraq war. Finally, "How Should the Right to Free Speech Apply to Corporations?" discusses commercial speech, media conglomerates, and telemarketers. Articles are included on both sides of any given issue, and each chapter opens with a brief introduction. Part of the publisher's "Current Controversies" series, the book is rich with opinion, but can be dense reading at times, and can also feel rather repetitive. (For example, media consolidation is addressed by articles in chapter 2 and again, under a somewhat different lens, in chapter 4.) More of a supplemental resource than an introduction to current controversies, this book provides plenty of food for thought and discussion to students who are studying the issues addressed.

Gr 7 Up-This book presents opposing opinions regarding four volatile questions. "Should Free Speech Be Limited?" addresses flag burning, hate speech, restricted speech on college campuses, and pornography. "Is Free Speech Threatened?" argues issues related to media consolidation, library Internet filters, campaign-finance reform, and freedom of the press. "Does the War on Terror Threaten Free Speech?" discusses topics like the restriction of free speech during wartime, antiterrorism policies, and the Patriot Act. "How Should the Right to Free Speech Apply to Corporations?" concerns broadcast-media conglomerates, telemarketers, and overall free-speech rights of corporations. Chapter prefaces offer background information, and the articles, all previously published in periodicals, books, and scholarly journals, are fully documented. Some of the material has been edited for a young adult audience, and titles were changed to make the purpose of the pieces clearer. Though similar in focus to books in the "Opposing Viewpoints" series, this title is a useful addition.-Pat Scales, South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities, Greenville Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
