Joshua Safran was still a preschooler when his mother decided that nuclear apocalypse might be just one sky-burst away and, abandoning San Francisco, took off with him, searching in the wilderness for utopia. For years, they leapfrogged from one counterculture preserve to the next, leaving the rudderless young boy reeling for certainty. Things grew even worse when his mother married a crude, abusive alcoholic. Finally, as a teenager, Joshua escaped to a more conventional setting, but even there he found himself an outsider, a broken utopian stranded among bullies. A moving story of coming-of-age and survival.
