Free to Fly

Barnes & Noble - Lisa Zhito
The harmony-rich girl pop of platinum-selling supergroup Point of Grace has never sounded better than on Free to Fly, which finds the group surging with new creative and vocal energy after a year-long hiatus. Focusing more attention on their material this time around, they looked outside the Christian songwriting community for the first time -- with ear-opening results. The first track, "By Heart," was obviously written as a mainstream love song, then given just enough lyric tweaks to avoid offending core Christian fans. Although this upbeat ballad would have been the perfect vehicle for the crossover radio success POG deserve, the retrofitted spiritual message feels awkward. Better is the material from hit-makers of past albums; Lowell Alexander, who wrote POG's 1997 Dove Award-winning "Keep the Candle Burning," contributes the can't-miss power ballad "You Will Never Walk Alone." Vocally, the women show considerable moxie on the excellent "Free Indeed," a jazzy pop number with funky flare that proves these girls have attitude -- not to mention plenty of grace.
All Music Guide - Jonathan Widran
When you listen to this sweet-voiced foursome, it's still hard to get aural images of Wilson Phillips out of your mind, but it's nice to know that a girl group can still achieve such powerful emotions via harmony-driven songs. They've earned an astonishing 21 consecutive number one hit singles and have five gold albums, communicating their love of God in ways that range from rock with a bluesy edge like the anthemic rabble-rouser "Praise Forevermore" to simple, breathy cards of encouragement "You'll Never Walk Alone," "He Sends His Love". "Blue Skies" is a bit simplistic lyrically, but the edgy rock guitars are enhanced with a soaring orchestra, giving the tune major inspirational power. The one genre POG hasn't entered often enough is R&B; the opening track features a gently throbbing groove that is borderline hip-hop. Their best songs always feature the four voices all the way through, but on occasion, one of the ladies takes the lead before the rest chime in, as on "All That I Need." Not a bad little tune, but it's wimpy compared to the power pop of the one that follows it "Something So Good". What a unique dilemma -- having so much good material on each album that the songs that don't stand out seem dull by comparison. The liner material mentions that POG exists to "celebrate the triumph of Jesus Christ." And in so doing, they are creating some of CCM's most triumphant and uplifting music.

    Best music for all ages

Point of Grace combines fantastic voices with a love of God to produce music that teens, mothers and children can listen to together. A great CD altogether, my personal favorite song is Yes, I Believe.

    Incredible Group!!!

I've been a P.O.G. fan for years. My favorite song on there newest CD is ''Yes, I Believe'', because it reminds us all that it's okay to stand up and show the world that we are christians. We sometimes let what people say get to us, and it shouldn't be that way. Listening to this song helps us see that it's all a part of letting God be first in our lives to make the difference in our heart.

    Fantastic Album!!

I enjoyed their first album, but this is truly a step up from that one. The songs are lyrically very strong, and the performances and production have made me listen to this album over 20 time since getting it 2 weeks ago! (especially track 7 - Free Indeed. Fantastic track!) Definately a recommended purchase!
