Overview

Oscar-winning composer James Horner is the mastermind behind some of the most memorable music in soundtrack history, including those of TITANIC, APOLLO 13, and BRAVEHEART. Now he’s joined forces with the amazing a cappella collective of women activists, Sweet Honey in the Rock, on the FREEDOM SONG soundtrack. The result? An album with enough soul to move mountains. Whether embracing traditional gospel songs or newly penned spirituals, Sweet Honey in the Rock deliver complex, stirring harmonies sung with passionate conviction. A tried-and-true classic like "This Little Light of Mine" shines with rekindled fire and spirit, while "I’m On My Way to Freedom Land," finds the six voices sounding like a huge marching army. Horner’s discreet accompaniment -- mostly hand-clapping and foot-stomping -- ensures that the rich, powerful vocals are the focus here. Elevated by the voices of Sweet Honey in the Rock, the moving final track, "Song of Freedom," penned by queen of pop Carole King, becomes an uplifting celebration of African-American oral history. The FREEDOM SONG soundtrack is as compelling and inspiring as the story of the Civil Rights Movement itself.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Steve Huey
The soundtrack to the TV project Freedom Song was composed by James Horner (of Titanic fame, among others) and features performances by the legendary Carole King and Sweet Honey in the Rock. Appropriately, there's an old-time spiritual feel to much of the music here, which fits the show quite well.
