Sixth grader Nate Banks knows something odd is going on, especially when it starts to snow, and the snow smells like rotten cabbage! It's clear that the supervillian Coldsnap is on the loose. Nate thinks he knows how to defeat him, but superhero Ultraviolet thinks the case is too dangerous. When Coldsnap goes after an American treasure and Ultraviolet can't go it alone, it's up to Nate and his friends to save the day!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara Carroll Roberts
Action-packed, fun, and wildly inventive, this second installment in "The Amazing Adventures of Nate Banks" series is sure to be a hit with middle-grade children—especially boys and reluctant readers—who love fast-moving plots and superheroes. In this adventure, twelve-year-old Nate confronts the super-villain, Coldsnap, who blankets Nate's Arizona town in sauerkraut-scented snow. Coldsnap is attempting to defeat superhero, Ultraviolet—who in civilian life is Nate's history teacher. He also wants to bring press attention to blond, super-rich, motel-chain-heiress Colleen Collins, who bears a striking and highly comic resemblance to a certain real-life blonde, super-rich, hotel-chain heiress—even down to the tiny dog carried in her hand bag. Along the way, the reader meets Nate's two sidekicks, Teddy and Fiona, as well as a cribbage-playing zombie, and the dean of superheroes, Doctor Nocturne. This is a funny and fun-loving romp, that has Nate's courage and quick thinking saving the day. There are several striking qualities here that place Nate Banks a cut above many middle-grade series. Most notably, Bell creates unique, rounded characters that drive the plot forward—rather than flat "types" who are simply there to be acted upon by the mechanics of the plot. And Nate's narrative voice is witty, observant, and individual. In addition, rather than traditional black-and-white spot illustrations, this series features a full-color, eight-page comic in the center of the book that provides a plot-element that cannot be narrated by Nate. All in all, this title is a classy package—one that young action and adventure lovers will certainly enjoy. Reviewer: Barbara Carroll Roberts

Great new series for kids, pre teens, and fun loving adults! What a great surprise! I was looking for a new series to get started on and this one was a winner. It sets the stage for exciting things to come, with a great hero at the center of the story, with Nate Banks. For those looking for what will truly be the next big thing, you should rush out and get this book and give it to your kids to read. I already have the first two, and am looking forward to the third. Full of action, excitement, cool comic book references, and some neat lessons for kids about perseverance! A winner!
