Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

The battle for control of Antarctica's ice quickly turns into a fight for survival in this uneven debut thriller. Idealistic and controversial (but corporate) environmentalist Ben Maki wants to bring fresh water to millions by melting the Antarctic icebergs. As Maki's trial run progresses, a group of scientists studying the icebergs begin falling prey to a deadly illness and to packs of vicious Antarctic rats. Maki and his colleagues must abandon their efforts, hoping only to get out of Antarctica alive. While the scientific and ethical themes are fascinating and timely and the remoteness of the Antarctic makes an ideal thriller setting, readers will find it difficult to suspend their disbelief long enough to find the rats scary rather than silly. Dionne would have done better to stick to the human capacity for monstrosity-something she touches on, but never fully explores-and the surprisingly complex and overlapping motivations of the characters. A chill a minute

Freezing Point is Karen Dionne's debut novel and it's the greatest thing since ice cubes.
It takes place on an Antarctic research station involves eco-terrorism, scientists trying to solve the world water shortage problem, heros crooks and murderers. Then she throws in an ememy that they will all have to battle and you wonder will any one survive.
So while your teeth are chattering from the cold you sit on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next and even though you know the next sentence or paragraph or page contains horrors, you can't stop reading it.
It's well written and the story line is top notch.
A best seller in progress.

    A well written engaging thriller

Fresh water has become an increasingly scarce luxury for many people around the globe. Environmentalist Ben Maki believes he can fix the supply and demand issue by melting the Antarctic ice. However, many doubters think it can¿t be done and skeptics feel the unregulated corporate world, which Maki, belongs to, will keep supply low in order to insure the price is exorbitant and water trickles down at the rate the market place deems profitable. ---------- Maki and the world¿s leading scientists and technocrats begin a trial run of his model. However, disease attacks the researchers killing several and Antarctic rat packs swarm all over the human bases. Maki¿s dream is shattered as he and his peers struggle to escape the deadly continent.-------------- When this well written engaging thriller focuses on the science and the related scientific ethics, FREEZING POINT is a great tale. When the plot switches to killing rodents, the sensationalism increases the excitement level at the cost of losing its prime focus point on humanity¿s inhuman bottom line failures by turning into an inane horror tale. Still this is a fascinating and thought provoking work as the next great global war is not oil but over water.------------- Harriet Klausner

    Freezing Point by Karen Dionne

If you like your suspense to be organic to life, not contrived the way some serial killer books feel, then read Freezing Point. As unique as the story is ¿ using microwave beams to melt icebergs to get clean water ¿ it feels as if it could be true. But the suspense is not in the melting of an iceberg, but what happens in the trying ¿ and what could happen in the doing. Freezing Point has suspense, action, unusual settings, believable characters, with environmental issues, scientific fact and theory and a touch of horror thrown in.

    unexpected

Though it takes much of the book to set the cast of characters and the multiple plot lines, the second half does move at a more brisk pace with some big surprises.
The environmentalist fervor overruns the story in a preachy way in some parts.
I don't understand how the title fits the plot.
I did like the characters and the opening boat scene was great.
And I did want to finish the book to figure out what was going to happen next.
