French Arias

Barnes & Noble - Andrew Farach-Colton
This is Marcelo ?lvarez's third recital disc for Sony and the best yet. The Argentinian tenor sounds very much at ease -- both technically and emotionally -- and though he imbues these French arias with more Italianate warmth than Gallic elegance, it would be churlish to complain about such finely characterized singing. ?lvarez captures the yearning of des Grieux in Massenet's Manon, giving a particularly tender account of "C'est un r?ve." His Hoffmann, in Offenbach's Tales, is fanciful and quick-witted, his Faust Gounod a sensitive soul, and his Don Carlos in the original French version of Verdi's opera aristocratically ardent. Barnes & Noble - Andrew Farach-Colton
This is Marcelo Álvarez's third recital disc for Sony and the best yet. The Argentinian tenor sounds very much at ease -- both technically and emotionally -- and though he imbues these French arias with more Italianate warmth than Gallic elegance, it would be churlish to complain about such finely characterized singing. Álvarez captures the yearning of des Grieux in Massenet's Manon, giving a particularly tender account of "C'est un rêve." His Hoffmann, in Offenbach's Tales, is fanciful and quick-witted, his Faust Gounod a sensitive soul, and his Don Carlos in the original French version of Verdi's opera aristocratically ardent. He admirably negotiates the treacherous string of high Cs in "Pour mon âme" from Donizetti's La Fille du Régiment -- though, admittedly, without the élan of Pavarotti in his famous Decca recording. Still, one never feels that Álvarez has ventured out of his depth, and given the demands of this wide-ranging program, that's saying a lot. Opera veteran Mark Elder conducts the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice and elicits some marvelously detailed playing -- listen, for example, to the exquisite solo work in the Verdi aria. For a more authentic approach to the French style, Roberto Alagna's award-winning EMI recital is not to be missed, but Álvarez's dedicated interpretations are well worth hearing.
New York Times - Matthew Gurewitsch
From the opening cut, Werther's gloomy recitation "Pourquoi me réveiller," the singing is ardent yet nuanced, with admirable variety in dynamics, phrasing and attack. The tenor's sunny side breaks through merrily in Donizetti's "Ah! mes amis," from "La Fille du Régiment," featuring nine high C's flung out with ringing nonchalance.
