Meet the Author

Christiane de Nicolay-Mazery was born in the west of France where she spent her childhood between her family property of Montfort le Rotrou and that of her paternal grandparents at the Château de Lude, one of the jewels of French Renaissance art. As passionate for the "art de vivre" of France's well-heeled families as she is for their history, she has already published several works, including The French Château: Life, Style, Tradition (Thames & Hudson, 2001) and Private Houses of Paris: The "Hôtels Particuliers" Revealed (I.B Tauris & Co.). A specialist in furniture and antiques, de Nicolay-Mazery works at Christie's in Paris.

Photographer Christina Vervitsioti-Missoffe has worked for many Greek, British, and French magazines, including Elle Décoration and Géo.

    Not What I Thought

    I was looking for a book which might help me create the French look, although I'm beginning to believe that only a person born and reared in the culture can capture the "je ne sais quoi" of Frenchiness; it's intuitive, something like being a Southerner. The book is lovely, but it's more a tour of museum chateau rooms than one of creating one's own French abode. I think that the book indulged a little too much the photographer's expertise. What was the point of giving over a full-page to a black lab, the most ubiquitous dog in America, lying on a rug ? Or a full-page of orchids like the ones I can find in my local supermarche. I understand the necessity of showing some landscape relative to a chateau, but a full-page photo of lily pads? None of the quietly elegant flowers themselves, just green pads - not even a frog to make them interesting. Lots of detail photos, but I could have foregone a picture of beets and some other commonplace objects. It's a quality book, but I'll buy another one, this time in a B&N store, where I can see if what I'm looking for is what I'm getting. This did inspire me to clean up my living room.
