Overview

With 9,000 pipes, the Great Auditorium Organ in Ocean Grove, New Jersey is great by any standard. Originally installed by the British organ builder Robert Hope-Jones in 1908, it was rebuilt and enlarged various times until it reached its present mightiness. Ocean Grove's resident organist is Gordon Turk, a noted soloist and professor at Pennsylvania's West Chester University, who plays this program of daredevil 19th-century French works. The music is gaudy, brimming with overweening confidence and love of display, but there are also moments of hushed piety and reflection. Technical challenges do not seem to exist for Turk, who concentrates on blitheness and massive sound. Dorian's recording deserves the "spectacular" in the title.
