Overview

Mannheim Steamroller celebrates the 25th anniversary and conclusion of its Fresh Aire series with the final installment, Fresh Aire 8: Infinity, and the amassing of the entire series in this elegant boxed set. From the very first album, Fresh Aire 1: Spring, the eclectic music of composer Chip Davis's Mannheim Steamroller has been an audiophile's delight; indeed, the early albums were sold exclusively through stereo stores. Davis, who is a drummer and flutist himself, engineered a unique and innovative sound -- using synthesizer, live chamber orchestra, harpsichord, recorders, winds, and drum kit -- to paint delicate impressionistic soundscapes, rock through a Renaissance faire, blast the speakers with an organ toccata, or rocket through the cosmos. The first four albums are season-themed and trade more on instrumental subtleties, while the ambitious Fresh Aire 5: To The Moon draws on the lush, robust sounds of the London Philharmonic and Cambridge Singers for a more epic effect. Greek myths are set to music on Fresh Aire 6 while Fresh Aire 7: Mystic sees Davis diving into the myriad mystical connotations of the number seven. The cover of the eighth album depicts its corresponding number horizontally for a unique musical musing on the concept of infinity. Enigmatic and enchanting, Davis and his Mannheim Steamroller have racked up sales of 24 million albums in its first quarter century, and the group's tours have been sold out the world over. Both neophytes and owners of the original individual albums will both delight in this scintillating box set, housed in a fine wooden mini-chest and remastered in HDCD.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Campbell
Mannheim Steamroller is actually Chip Davis, a virtual one-man band of several talents. This eight-disc collection contains all of Davis' monumental Fresh Aire series, starting in 1974 and concluding with the eighth and (supposedly) final disc from 2000. The Fresh Aire sessions not only encompassed the combined elements of new age and neo-classical but also created many of them. These records initially appealed to audiophiles as state-of-the-art (of the time) technology was utilized, enhancing the listening experience. Eventually, the albums were taken at face value and admired for the various themes Davis employed. Some of these records, mainly the first four, addressed the universal themes of the seasons, evoking emotions surrounding fall, spring, summer, and winter. The succeeding discs delved into interpretations of Greek mythology, futuristic explorations, and a mega-successful Christmas disc. On disc number eight, Davis attempts to summarize all of the above in titles like "Big Bang (Infinity in Cosmology)," "Leonardo (The Infinite Thinker)," and "Waterfall (Infinity in Art)." While this is a costly set with a lot of material to digest, fans of Mannheim Steamroller will want it. For the novice, start with any of the first four.
