Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Sam is a cute black and white dog. Her mistress notices that it is a nice day and suggests that Sam go outside and play. Once there, she reflects that she really can't have much fun because she needs a friend. Sam decides to try meeting and being friendly to a variety of animals that she sees. The robin is frightened and flies away, the frog also is not happy about playing with Sam and he hops away. Undeterred, Sam digs her way under the fence and reaches the world beyond her yard. But she doesn't have much luck there either, a cat and squirrel both flee and the snake just slithers away. Suddenly two eyes seem to be peering at Sam. It is a little boy and as one might guess, he is just the kind of friend Sam has been seeking. The pattern set with the sounds that the animals make, and the repetition of words and phrases will help young readers off to a good start. The pictures of Sam and her adventure are delightful and are full of clues to help kids work out what the text is saying. A good choice for that early reader shelf. A Level 1 book in the "Kids Can Read" series. 2003, Kids Can Press, Ages 4 to 6.

    My favorite childhood book

I used to read this book every night when I was a child. Yesterday I found it in an old box while I was cleaning out my room, and I read it again. It is still a wonderful book and I will pass it on to the youngsters in my family.
