As Mackenzie Blue gets ready to head out for a seven-day school camping trip, she is excited to be with her four best friends. However, throughout her stay, she has to deal with a number of different problems. First, she has to face Landon, on whom she has a huge crush. She also has to learn how to spend time with all of her best friends, even when they start to dislike each other. On top of that, she gets her first period, lives in fear of the supposed Mountain Man who lives in the mountains, and tries to prepare for the talent show at the end of the week. In the end, it all turns out okay, and she even gets her first kiss, a revived relationship with her best friends, and performs a great routine at the talent show. The story is very entertaining, but should probably be limited more to the older tween ages. I feel that the "getting her period" storyline would be too much for eight-year-olds. The book is very well developed and actually manages to create some suspense. At the end, you are left with a few questions lingering, which are sure to be further developed as the "Mackenzie Blue" series of books continues. Even I found myself wondering what would happen in relation to some foreshadowing in this book. The illustrations throughout the book are cute and help to give a visual of how characters look. Although not a "deep" classic novel, it is a lot of fun for the intended audience and uses current pop culture references and common tween problems. Reviewer: Melissa Rife

    Recommended for 12 year olds.

    My daughter has been reading this series and she really enjoys it.
    When I asked for her review she feft it was best for girls maybe 11-12
    because of some of the topics in the story.
